My wife and I are planning a trip to Amsterdam early next year.
Would anyone have a link to transportation there?
Any shots of trams or trains would be appreciated!
The tourist sites have little info on trains there, although I did see we can take a twenty minute train ride to Haarlem! I'd love to go there since I'm only a few minutes away from our Harlem right here!

    Johnny Trains,
I can understand that it is hard to find info if the travel agencies in the US is not up-to-date with regard to Europe.
I found some useful links that I recommend to study. There is a lot of info about hotels, trains, tramways, buses, art, entertainments, etc. etc... ;)
Take your time to go through it, I´m sure you can find what you are looking for.

I been there a few times, I worked for a Dutch company for 7 years and got 9 months of factory training in Veldhoven.

Almost all cities can be reached by trains, and in the "Centrum" (center of town) you will find the train station. Everybody speaks a little English, so you should have no problems.

If you want to go on any overnight trips by train go into any local "Riesburo" (travel agency), and they can set you up.

In Utrecht they have a really great Train Museum called " Nederlands Spoorwegmuseum " and you can climb all over many steam locos in their yard. It's a must see, and is only 30 minutes from Amsterdam.

The NS has a trip planner online with departure/arrival times price and travel times that will make all your excursions easy: NS Trip Planner

    Thanks everyone for the links!
I appreciate that and we are really looking forward to our visit!!!!!!
Like I mentioned, the Frommers book I bought and others I browsed through and internet sights usually just mention that trains are available to other European cities, but don't get into detail except for travel time and don't include photos of the trains themselves.

Hmmmmm........ a train museum just 30 minutes away.........YUM! [IMG]

I will spend tomorrow morning going through them!
We should be ordering our airline tickets this week and we'll be going in March which is just before the busy season starts. I want to see where Henry Hudson sailed from too! I grew up in New York City on Amsterdam Ave., live near the Hudson River and also live just minutes away from Harlem! I'll feel at home!!!!!!! [IMG]

Thanks again for the sites as they were very helpful.
The airline reservations are made and we just have to decide on a hotel, which we are pretty sure of anyway. It will be one of the canal houses.

The transportation site was great. The trams will be our major source for traveling around the city, and I do want to take a look at the subway too, even though the Frommers book reccomends staying out of it. (They're telling that to a guy that rides the NYC subway everyday??????LOL!). I can't wait to get to the da Ruijterkade or Central Station! When I made my first visit to a European city (Rome) I was in awe at all the trains in the Terminal there! This should be awesome too!

We are going to Haarlem by train and maybe another side trip to the train museum if I can.........

    Dank U wel!

    Thank you very much!

    Hi Johnny Trains,

Amsterdam is a great place to go for a visit. About the subway, forget the advice from the Frommers travel guide... the subway system isn't that big and the part you'll be using is very safe.
If you tell me what other things you might want to see just mail me (wilbert@rekonstrukt.nl) and I'll try to give you some info.

You might also want to check the site of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the Dutch railway co. There is also a site of the complete public transoprtation system which gives you directions from adress to adress, see here.

The train museum has a website, so you can check what's to see there. There's going to be a major renovation so it might be possible that they are closed during the period when you are visiting. You might want to give them a call to check.

You can also get some general information from the site of the Tourism Board.

BTW, I live in Rotterdam, about an hour by train from Amsterdam. Also very nice to go for a visit. You can take a boat tour along the harbor etc.
Ok that's about it for now. If you have any more questions, go ahead and ask.

    Kind regards,

    Wilbert

Johnny, of course years ago you could have taken the New York Central from Grand Central to Amsterdam, past Schenectady and before Fonda as I recall. Lol. :D
