I didn't get much chance to shoot pictures in the Underground. Usually, we were rushing through.

Here is one, however. I believe that is a Central Line train coming into the Kensington South Station. This station is not very far underground. Some if the wall in the background is lit by sunlight.

I like those surface, or near-surface stations on the underground, they are the only places you can get a good look at the trains [IMG]

Looks like a lot of undergrowth there, a disused platform on the far side?

Hi Pierce, that's a District line train arriving there, but the tracks there are also used by Circle line trains.

That bit of track did used to be four tracked, as a little way west of there it splits with two tracks turning North (circle line) to High St Kensington and two continuing west (District) to Earls Court, but they have simplified the tracks there at some point, my guess is that it's to make it easier for the passengers, or it would be hard for them to know which platform the next eastbound was going from, and there would be much running across footbridges.

Those lines, and what is now the Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines on the north side were all done using cut & cover tunelling, so are only just below the surface, and there are some open sections.
The rest of the lines are deep tunnelled and have much smaller height trains.

What's now the Hammersmith & City is the worlds first Underground railway, bult by the GWR, in broad guage times to forward trains arriving at Paddington to the City of London, some two miles away.

A somewhat odd fact is that the majority of "The Underground" is actually not underground! Once you get beyond the centre of the city most lines are surface running!

Thanks for correcting me on the identification of the lines running through this station.

I remember one of the other lines I rode on was much deeper underground. There was one very long escalator going down to it--seemd to go on forever.

Peirce, that really brought back some memories from (wow) 1972 and 74 when I was fortunate enough to spend quite a bit of time in London whilst attempting to sell L-1011 TriStars to the various British airlines. The tube was the only way to travel. :D

Yes I saw your Paris Metro shot also. that too was really good. But, I like this one the best. There's just so much to look at, I feel as if I were there!

    This is an interesting link:
    http://www.starfury.demon.co.uk/uground/

It's about ghost (i.e. closed) stations on the underground system.

Pierce, it also has a bit about the former tube station depected in "Die Another Day" (they did an amazing job with the decor, but blew it with a platform only big enough to hold a single car train! [IMG] )
