Not sure if this is a "valid" question, but figured I'd ask to get some input. Is there a difference between Lionel's steam locomotives versus their diesel locomotives (i.e., does one pull more weight in cars than the other? does one's motors last longer? etc.)? Or, is it purely taste (i.e., one liking the look of the steam locomotive over diesel or vice-versa)? Thank you.
Sure, it's a valid question......with no hard and fast answer. Current production, I wouldn't pay even 1/4 the asking, as I'd be ripping out the control systems anyway. Think older production (MUCH older): Think MagneTraction if you want to pull more cars. Think multiple motors from one e-unit, with MagneTraction if you really want to pull. Stay away from 2-position e-units. Generally, those are lower line locos. Never pay any kind of money for any steamer with a plastic motor block. If you want ALCO FA's, find the early 2023 style. Early postwar is usually better than late, any post war is better than MPC, Fundimensions marginally better than MPC. Opinion.
LeftyPJB- I do hope you will consider what ScaleCraft has offered. What he wrote is some good. solid advice. Do you already have some equipment, or looking before buying?
