I am in the process of helping a Senior citizen
resurrect his interest in model trains and discovered he has a Lionel -HO 4-6-2 Steamer, tender and approx 3 or 4 other freight cars.
According to the Public Broadcasting !Tracks Ahead Series!, Rivarossi made HO for Lionel in 1957 and Athearn made HO for Lionel in 1958.
    Roco also did in 1981.
These freight cars are stamped Lionel and the bottom plate on the steamer is marked Lionel
and I suspect this is either a 57 or 58 release.

I would think this almost qualifies as a collectable.

    Besides E-Bay, anybody have suggestions
    in determining it's value?

Thats some find! I can't give anything towards its value but be sure if listed anywhere and guys that are collectors.... The price in which your friend gets isn't going to be anything of a low dollar! I'm sure of that! I have 3 complete HO scale Lionel train sets and had a number of high offers to buy them from me... But they were my grandfathers and given to me so..... I couldn't part with them. And they still run without alot of noise or anything... Still in great shape.... So.. The shape is another sinario with them...

John, yesterday I found his 1963 catalog so that's the date of purchase. I guess the tracks ahead series didn't have all the infor.

Would there be some kind of book/ collectors publication suggesting prices?
    Thanks again,
    Chuck

    Chuck,
Hmmmm a book, the only thing I can tell you to do is find someone with a Lionel price guide and see if they may be listed in it. This is a hard subject... The only man I know or knew is now passed away. Last June. Or I could get you infor from him but sadly I can't.

Your best bet Chuck would be to go to a licenced Lionel dealer with history behis self and see if he might be able to help you.

John, two other things I discovered are, a small four page instruction sheet listing, for service and parts,"The Lionel Corporation, Hillside New Jersey, which is also the hometown of Atlas.
Co-incidence or did Atlas play a part?
2nd, he also has a Minnepolis and St. Louis Husky 2 axle switcher with a lubrication sheet.

Any chance you may have a extra lubrication sheet covering their 4-6-2 steamer?

    Thanks in advance,
    Chuck

    Chuck,
I'll have too look in my file cabinet... I may have one I'm not sure tho... I'll look and then let ya know...

Depending on the 4-6-2, and who made it for Lionel, you could use the Rivarossi being they played a part of it, or whatever other comapny that may have played a part. I have some HO scale Lionel cars that are identical to Athearn's. They are cabooses that are like the off center cupola caboose thats on the Athearn line. So I believe Athearn had a part in it as well.....

I'll see what I have on file tho. I might have the lubecation sheet. I don't know off hand...
