I know where there is a Lionel GP9 I can get at a reasonable price. I was told that the motor drive board was replaced with one thats AC . Is this a board that converts AC to DC to drive the motors? Are all the motors in these DC? Would it be a big deal to convert back to DC? If I went wireless would it matter?

We're still talking Large Scale, right?
Usually the diseasemals were GP-20's. Seen some 9's.
NEVER seen one converted to AC.
    Why would you do that?
Converting back....where are you gonna find the board?
Yes, DC can motors (4) always.
The original sound boards were junk, even by the standards of the day. The "power" board was ridiculous...add power board, sound, and 4 motors...and you had manufacturers stating you could not run Lionel engines with their power packs or warranty was void.
Anymore, on Lionel LS, "reasonable" is "free".
    Parts availability is...well, virtually non-existent.

I'd be looking for a USA Geep, but hey.
And remember..4 motors...each one drives one axle.
There is no gear train connection....pull one motor per truck to cut current draw, truck jacks one side and spins.

Add again to that these were 1:32.....and finding more 1:32 is not so much hard , as limited.
