Ok Orignally I wanted todo a NYC-MNR Layout, but I was playing around with RTS and came up with a fun layout I think, mixes Urban and Rural areas Basically the Blue is Elevated and the RED is under ground. I want to put a large River/Waterway between the 2 Boards, so the Bridge spans one part and the Tunnel is under the other. I'm not that good with RTS so I can't get the hight set properly but I belive I have enough distance to do the height and cross overs. Pher [ 30. April 2003, 20:07: Message edited by: Pher ]
Pher, It's a nice plan, looks like you will have a lot of possibilities for scenery and running. One problem I see is that you will have quite a reach across if a traind derails or you want to do some work in the center!
Pher, may I suggest something regarding the green track under the blue track on the right hand side? I used to have trouble reaching derailed cars in tunnels. You have a long tunnel there. What I do now, is to build the ground scenery gradually up to where a teain on the green track can not be seen from where you or visitors will be seeing it, because it is behind the slope. I make a tunnel portal at each end, but leave the top open so if need be, I can reach down and pick up any wreckage. I then make the scenery on the side of the blue track match the slope as if the ground continues. I may have a mountain covering both tracks, but I leave no more than 12" I have to reach into, all the rest is open at the top. It just looks like it is continuous. The rest looks fine if you can reach everything.
Actually where the Green goes under the Blue is going to be a Bridge that spans a river. The layout wil be a U shaped layout. The Red Rail will be a tunnel under the river. which the front will be open so I will have access to the train for any type of derailment. Today I will try to clean upthe image a bit more to make things look better. but RTS 5.0 isn;t as nice as other CAD programs. Pher
Pher, What is the purpose of your layout - rail road. It is difficult to critique without knowing the purpose. Looking at your plan, I see it as mostly a running layout vs an operating layout. It looks like a great passenger train layout, but not a very good freight layout. So if I asked you to define your layout in a short paragraph, what would you say?
The Upper part pf the layout will be an Urban Layout. to Run Passenger and some freight. The Lower part of the layout willbe a rural/industry based. I'm still playing with the layout, trying to draw it out in 3rd Plan it. but can't get elevations to work the way I want. so There will be some spurs for various things. The 2X 4 foot section the track in red will be an underwater tunnel. ( will have access to it at all times the blue section will be a Double decker Rail Bridge. ( atleast what I would like to try todo) I grew up in the Suburbs of NYC so I always fascinated the way both Passenger and Freight get in to the city and the way they get it all in there. Pher P.S. I updated the pic with what I drew in 3rd Plan it. Still haven't figured out Elevations. [ 02. May 2003, 16:07: Message edited by: Pher ]
Still a work in progress, but it gives the rough Idea what I want it to look like, the Doube track on the urban side going into the Tunnel is actually going to be below the upper part. -3" and have it raise coming up out on the back side so I can try bridges or something over the top. and where the river is won't have hills but a double decker bridge. That's a great plan. One question - how wide is the center of the "U"? One comment - as mentioned previously, the long reaches are tough when building.
one more question - the first drawing looks like you are planning with sectional track? I hope you will use flex track. I'm doing my first layout in N scale with flexible track, it is very easy to work with, maybe easier then sectional track. I might also add that I'm already gong back and cutting out track to add spurs, and I'm not even done with the mainline.
