Ever since I saw Marty McGuirk's model of a New Haven 170000 series boxcar on the Steam Era Freight Cars website, I thought "that's a neat car, I've got to model one of those." it is a 36 foot car, double sheathed, but with modern "dreadnaught" ends, steel roof, and Youngstown doors, but riding on archbar trucks. A real mix of eras.

A couple of years ago, I bought a bunch of Red Ball N scale car parts cast on an old linotype machine, including Youngstown doors and ribbed ends on eBay. When Vincent (Kisatchie) offered some MDC body shells on the Atlas forum recently, I immediately thought of this car. So, I've been working on one. It's not an exact model, as the Red Ball parts are not an exact match, and the door was so undersized I had to graft two to get one. But, I looks close enough to me.

    Here it is in primer:

Pardon the poor focus. The "sprung" roof rib will be glued down again - the camera caught that!

    Here's a side view:

And a shot of the underside, showing the shortened 40' Red Ball Underframe and the Precision Scale AB parts (Think the original had a K brake system):

Received a postcard from Clover House this morning that the dry transfers for this car were shipped on the 23rd, so should be painted by next weekend.

Paul, back in the era of these cars the New Haven painted its boxcars plain old boxcar red, so I plan to paint it with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red. I'll paint it as soon as things dry out here. We're having nasty weather today. If is not foggy it is storming and hailing. Ah, Springtime on the Gulf of Mexico.
