Has any one heard anything about the status of the Knox and Kane Railroad on the Kinzua Bridge. The Bridge collapsed this past summer during 80+ mile an hour wind storm. I was just wondering if anyone had hered if they were going to rebuild the bridge? The brig was the second tallest Railroad bridge in the US. Towering at 301 feet in height and 2,050 feet in length. Phantom Videos has a video now out on the Knox and Kane, when the bridge was still in one pice.
I had forgotten about this. The photos taken at the time it collapsed were awful. I'm also wondering of any news. Boxcab E50
My friends & I railfanned there this past Oct and no decision has been made yet due to the EXTREME high cost involved. I really think that without that attraction, ridership on the line will suffer.
I heard the bridge project is dead in the water, no pun intended. The estimate to rebuild it is in the neighborhood of $40-million and the state of Pennsylvania obviously has better things to spend that money on. (Anyone who has ever driven on a Pennsylvania road can attest to this!)
Brian is correct, the state is not going to fund rebuilding but is cleaning up the valley floor and doing some improvments to the VC. Here's the webpage... http://www.kinzuabridgeonline.com/news.php?action=view&id=22
Mike, Thanks for posting the link for the bridge. As interested as I was to see it, it was also vary disheartening. Its just a very sad thing to see.
Very sad to learn that it is now officially ended. I can understand the costs involved precluding the rebuild. However, I cannot quite decipher the connection between it's past popularity, and an increase in people wanting to visit. Sure, there is a novelty factor. But after the memory of it's collapse fades, I doubt people will keep coming. Not as they did when there was a railroad to ride across the bridge. Boxcab E50
