Kato SD45 Shell Compatability

Can the shell assembly from the older non DCC ready Kato SD45 locomotive fit on the newer DCC ready chassis without any modification ? Thanks in advance for any information.

Yep, sure can. That goes for the SD40's as well.

 

The only thing that doesn't fit is the black "light blocker" that fits within the cab area. I couldn't fit the old shell on the new mech so I removed it. I'll probably cut down the piece of plastic to make it fit but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the info. Does this apply to the Kato E8-A and the PA-1 locomotives also ?

Not sure, but I don't think the design has changed for the 8's and PA's as there were delivered with DCC mechanisms. Maybe someone else would know for sure.

 

Lit numberboards were added to the E8 and PA shells in recent years, but the actual chasses have not changed since they were first introduced.
