I was wondering if the kato sd40-2 snoot loco is any good , because I'll be getting a bc rail sd40-2 snoot loco in tuesday. ------------------ yo,yo,yo,yo. yoyo10 is in da house! [This message has been edited by yoyo10_ca (edited 16 July 2000).]
All of the kato loco's I have ever had have been great, my snoots are superb and the white LED looks great on it to. enjoy Kevin
I think you'll be pleased. Don't look directly into the headlight without the proper eye protection gear! It's a real bright one! ------------------ RAILROADING-TO-THE-MAX! Brent Tidaback, Member #234 and a N-Scaler to boot!
I have 2 BNSF snoots and they are excellent. The only problem being I now want white leds for the rest of my roster ------------------ http://users.bigpond.net.au/railroad2000
The snoots are wonderful I now need to change all my headlights to white LED's too, Paul! ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
Why don't all the manufacturers use the white LEDs? They are so superior. Also, it would be nice to see locos with fitted working ditch lights (but perhaps that would start putting the prices up towards levels that the customers would not accept). Ben
White LED's just came on the scene within the last several months at an affordable price. ------------------ Keep on Track'N Harold Riley www.phcomputing.com

Ben

Becuase it would be about another 4 dollars per unit, and then the hobby store adds profit to the 4, making it actually about 6.50 per unit by the time you get your pwas on it. I really can't be spending extra $$ on locos, so I am glad they did what they did. Yo Yo, you will be very impressed with the locomotive, especially the BCR, or CPR unit as they did a great paint job on them. They run like a charm, and can pull the walls of your house, and drag it to Japan. They are alittle fast, but not too bad. The detail is superb, but is not accurate for BCR or CPR. If you are getting a British Columbia Railway one I would suggest that you add a bell at where the upper headlight is, add ditch lights, a better plow and different horn. Of course, if you are happy how it is, great, cause I don't intend to spend that much time working on a model that would be considered a leaser to me (I don't model BCR). Enjoy it! Does anyone know if the Snoot rides on the same chassis as the good ol' 40-2? I am interested in a kitbash and need to know if it is indeed the same length as its brother unit- I am thinking of a highhood for the unit and am able to get the snoot at much better prices and availability. Thanks in advance, Justin May
Justin, same frame same walkway. Hoy do I know? I shortened the snoot on my CPR units. Hey I'm still havin' FUN!! ------------------ Catt!#118
Thanks Catt, I just happened across an Athabasca HH kit, and was wondering if the Snoot would be a better canidate than the now overpriced straight SD40-2 Does anyone forsee a problem in the HH conversion using a Snoot? Justin May [This message has been edited by Justin May (edited 18 July 2000).]
justin dont do it wait for about 1 more week and you can get a atlas sd35 high hood shell for $8ish and it will be a perfect match to the kato engine just cut the shell and glue where the athabasca one you have to bend and cut and it dose not match all that well so you need squadron putty for the holes. waiting for my shells impatiently!!!! ------------------ Norfolk Southern The Pack Mule of Transportation Mo-Pac RULES Heritage N-Scale Group, Joliet, Il.
also justin why are they overpriced we can get them here still for 60- 65 bucks!! ------------------ Norfolk Southern The Pack Mule of Transportation Mo-Pac RULES Heritage N-Scale Group, Joliet, Il.
Justin, same frame same walkway. If it works on the regular SD40-2 it will work on the snoot too.I'm thinking of putting a SD45 body on a SD40-2 frame and walkway just to see if people will notice. Hey! Now I'm really havin'FUN!! ------------------ Catt!#118
I guess that would be a SD45-2R or maybe a SD40-5? Glad to see you're still having FUN! bnfan99, Could this be the way to do those BN RLM/alternitve fuel units? By the way, I have a pic of one of the extended range fuel tenders. It showed up in some shots I took around Cameron, IL. I forgot I took it and just developed the film the other day. It was a nice suprise! ------------------ RAILROADING-TO-THE-MAX! Brent Tidaback, Member #234 and a N-Scaler to boot! [This message has been edited by Maxwell Plant (edited 18 July 2000).]
Makinbacon, Here down south we are having one he!! of a time getting most of anything from Kato, and if we do get it then it is usually $75-100 dollars. I can find snoots for less than the SD40-2 right now, so I am inclined to use it rather than the more expensive model. I have already had the HH assembled and have the HH 35s also. Just can't bring myself to cut them, so I will wait for BLMA HH and also the 35 shell when it becomes available. Is the Atlas Catalog still down? Y'all have a good one, Justin May
I just purchased a snoot today. Hearing you guys giving rave reviews about them I had to go see for my self. I had originally planned on getting a UP but when my eyes caught that blue and yellow Santa Fe,I knew that was the one. I too am very impressed with the white LED. So instead of getting Katos $8 LED from their parts list, anybody know where I can get the same kind of LED? Does Radio Shack sell these,or should I just check with a hobby shop?
I honestly can't answer your question, however I have E Mail kato with a question before, they were very nive and quick to respond. I even got a E Mail Christams card from them!! So, maybe just drop 'em an E Mail and they can tell ya... Alot of people having been trashing the blue-white LED but in N scale they are fine. I ask you, youd u prefer to get a unit with a white-blue led or a Yellow thing shining giving everything an odd tint? Any one know if Digitrax is going to go towards a white LED on there 'drop in' decoders?? It would be a very nice touch!! Just an idea. Happy Railroading!! I believe the drop in decoder for the SD40-2 and Snoot are now blue-white LED. I have not heard about the other drop in decoders. This would be wonderful if they do this with all of their decoders. Matt Nscale is better because: Our Blue-White LEDs are better
