I just picked up a Kato Mikado online. Someone putzed with this thing and it has needed some work just to get running. The remaining issue is that 3 of the driver sets are too narrow. This surprisingly causes only one issue: there's some drag when crossing switches as the drivers pinches the guard rails.

I tried the trick of wedging a micro screwdriver between the wheels and chassis, but that makes no difference. I started taking the drive mechanism apart and wasn't ready for that type of project tonight. Does anybody have any tricks for widening the gauge on these things without pulling each driver set out?

I'm going to answer my own thread, so the info is out there for the next person who needs it.

After further reading, I learned that the drivers are plastic. I was able to use my screwdriver trick again, but successfully with this new info. I focused pressure on the very center of the drive wheel. Now she glides over switches with ease.

IINM, steamer drive wheels are sometimes set a little narrow to better handle sharp curves. I would also run it over your tightest curves to make sure it works there before declaring final victory.
