What kind of noise are you getting? I think the ol' Railway Doctors may come up with a cure, but we'll need a little more info.

There was an article in 1992? issue of N Scale Magazine on how to make them run smoother. I was just wondering if anybody knows what the article says.

Swap the chassis for an Atlas GP40-2 [IMG]

Just kidding (since I have never actually done it).. it seems like there was an article about this problem; I will try and research it.

I have one of these and don't have a problem. If you feel comfortable, take it apart and have a look around. It may just need a little lubrication. Otherwise there could be burrs on the gears. In that case, check out the thread on repowering Bachmann C40-8s and read about the "Brent Treatment." That will do it if it's burrs.

Cory, you get a gold star! But I want to start getting some residules! [IMG] Yes, if it's spurs this will definately get rid of the noise. BUT! I doubt that's the problem, Kato wouldn't let one of those get by. I think you may have picked up some grunge in the gear box. It's happened with my Atlas/Kato GP30. I started to get a wierd "knock" in it and I finally took the gear box apart. I found a HUGE hunk of ballast and had it removed. That was that. I'd still like to know what the noise is before I pass a final judgement. Does it grind, knock or buzz?

Scott, yes you are correct, there was an article in an early Nscale Magazine detailing how to tune a GP50 / 38. This Kato suffers terribly from misalignment and this causes a strange noise. I have a few Kato GPs and have had two with this problem, both slightly older and a bit rough (purchased 2nd Hand). By following the steps in the N Scale Mag article I solved the problem.
If you cannot find the article, contact me and I will FAX it to you.

Scott, the Magazine index - http://www.index.mrmag.com/ - shows the July/Aug and Nov/Dec 1990 issues had a repair manual article each and the Sept/Oct 1990 had a tune-up article on the Kato GP's. All by Ron Beardon.

    Gary.

Mick, how did the move go?

Maybe the prime mover just needs a valve job?
