Hello, I am planning on buying a UP Big boy for my O scale train and I can't figure out what would be better to buy? I think the lionel big boy is way overpriced and I think the K-line model would be a better choice. What are the differences beetween the 2? The UP Big Boy made by K-Line has TMCC Railsounds and the all the other bells and whistles included! I can't see any difference beetween the two at all..... What do you guys know about them?

The K-Line Big Boy isn't full sized but 1:58 scale. I don't know if Lionels is 1:48 or 1:58. Is it stated in the catalog what size it is. IMHO Lionel's is overpriced, being that you are buying the name. K-Lines challengers have recieved rave reviews, and there is no reason to believe that the Big Boy wouldn't be any different.

I currently have a Lionel Lionmaster Big Boy, and am enjoying it. It is rated for 31" curves (although obviously the larger the curve, the better) and I am using it on 42" curves with no big problems. I believe I paid aroun $500 for it. (includes sounds and smoke)

I have a thing about Big Boys and would love to see a K-line, 1:58th scale or whatever - never seen one. I have a Lionel JLC Big Boy -- scale (33 inches) and requiring at least 72 inch curves and both MTH (Railking) and Lionel (Lionmaster) semi-scale Big Boy, both compressed to right at 29 inches long, and both probably will run on 31 inch curves although I've never tried anything less than 60. What impresses me is how good either of the semi-scale models look: as long as the JLC is not right next to them they look good, as if they are scale. And more important, on curves the JLC looks ridiculous even on a 72 inch daimeter, the front of the boiler juts just a bit less than two inchs beyond the outside rail. Whereas either of the semi-scale locos, even though just a few inchs shorter, don't look bad at all and hardly projects past the edge of the track on 72 inch curves. The MTH is my favorite runner -- a bit better sound, but the Lionmaster looks a bit better, I think, particularly its driving wheels, at least on mine.
