Okay... Hey Don: For those less gifted (that is, those of us who are either still awaiting delivery or the money to go buy that issue) how 'bout telling us WHY Kalmbach desires it... you know, I hope, that one a sh...
I got my MR on the 29th too, but I didn't get my N-Scale until last week, 3 weeks after everybody else got their's!
I got my NSR the day it came out, in Denver, CO., at N Scale Supply... I love that place! What's good reading on N scale in the new MR?
I don't seem to remember much in the way of N scale goodies in the June issue, but as was mentioned earlier, the part dedicated to large-scale railroading is pretty awesome. Also, the article on Progressive Rail (an industrial line in Minnesota) can be adapted to N scale, especially on a shelf-type layout. The N Scale Railroading issue has a mind-blowing article on a layout that features a model of Enola Yard, with lots and LOTS of Conrail diesels. The Milwaukee Road layout is also very nice, with sweeeeet details.
I guess I didn't get the same JUNE 2002 issue of MODEL RAILROADER that everybody else did. My copy had alot of N-Scale items in it. A couple of Product Reviews on TRAINWORX quad hoppers, InterMountain's covered hoppers, a HOW-TO about building an N-Scale signal bridge, many other good ideas. Just because the articles/layouts are for that big scale (HO) and bigger scale (G), doesn't mean that I can't learn and find something in each article that I can use on the INDIANA RAILWAY. Just because something is not N-Scale don't bypass it automatically, we can get new ideas from anyplace. I just wish I had more time so I could write a few articles for MODEL RAILROADER myself. Talk about getting magazines in the mail, MODEL RAILROADER, TRAINS, CLASSIC TRAINS, AND RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN all came on the same day! Haven't watched TV in a couple days now, (Such a big loss?!?), have been holed up in the layout room wearing eyeballs out reading. Such is the life a model railroad NUT!
And actually, the article on the HO Iron Range layout has great ideas on operations, and explains the thought process behind it pretty well. Even though the layout is an HO layout, that could have easily been in any scale.
I found the article on Proressive Rail to be just what I needed to finish off my layout. I can take that plan and fit it into a 30" x 106" shelf area and model the whole darn railroad. Incorporating it right into my new GVR layout.
Why didn't I remember reading those reviews? Especially since Trainworx is literally down the road from me in Delta (his code 40 N scale turnouts are awesome, BTW). Shame on me!! I've seen the quad hoppers from Trainworx, and they're great! I still have ex-DRGW hoppers of that style in the yard here in Grand Junction, and they match the real thing pretty well. You're dead-on about getting ideas from other scales- just 'cause were N scale nuts, don't mean we can't learn from others!
