I have read in some threads that people use joint compound for makeing rocks . I was wondering 1) What type to use?, 2) What tool to use?, and 3) how do you carve the rocks. If any one can answer these it would help other wise i will have to buy molds and this way sounds a lot easier to do.

I have used joint compound for making roads and parking lots but I cant imagine anyone using it for rocks. The reason I say this would be it takes almost 24 hours for it to set up. Also it would have no strength to it and would chip easily during transportation. I would use hydrocal before I would use joint compound.

Ditto. Plus joint compound tends to crack if applied too thick. There are other materials better suited for rock work.
