    Never thought I'd see the day when SD40-2s are being retired en masse........I know the CEFX units are leasers, but wonder what'll happen to the UP-owned SD40-2s and Tunnel Motor variants? Awful lot of rent-a-wreck power............

    And a big batch of C40-8s coming off what I assume were 20-year leases... Are these the first C40-8s to be retired by their original owner? I suppose I should have expected that it would be UP. All C40-8s I know of are either working for their original owner or the railroad that bought the original owner. No Class 2/3 or leasers yet.

    Methinks the SD40-2s will lease out faster than the C40-8s will, unless some regional is short on cash and hard-up for power.

    True, but somebody will still get the GEs. I'm just trying to guess who might. Susie-Q might take them if they needed power, but I don't think they're short. MRL's got GEVOs on order, last I heard. They probably won't want them either. FEC probably won't take non-EMDs if they can help it. I wonder if a smaller road will want them? MMA certainly has GEs, and they're not all 4-axle like many small lines. P&W, whereas, is a more conventionally 4-axle road. W&LE... well, they're a long shot, but if they'll lease H-engine SD90s, they'll take anything.

    Since secondhand C40-8s are a new thing, they're basically guaranteed to turn up somewhere we don't expect them.

    Those C40-8's are the ex-CNW units. Its been rumored they were going at the end of the lease for several months. I haven't seen one come through Sparks for 3 or 4 months and the UP -8's are supposed to stay out of California. The numbers on the lease units look like ex-UP/SP engines, which have been off the UP roster for a couple of years anyway. Short lines will pick up some of them but with a recession I bet a lot will get cut up and shipped to China.

    Yes, pollution issues. IIRC Texas has some air quality issues but UP likes to send them down there. SP did that with their Alco's too.
