Greetings fellow trainboarders; I'm wondering if anyone knows if the Delaware & Hudson ( D&H ) and the Pennsylvania railroad ( PRR ) interchanged and if so at what locations along their respective systems? Thanks in advance for your assistance DHguy1984
The D&H certainly interchanged a lot with their archrival New York Central, to the point where the D&H showed the NYC tracks Albany-Manhattan on their system map. They probably also interchanged with the Pennsy. I don't know, it just seems like everyone did. Most likely spot is Scranton or Wilkesbarre.
By the way @DHGUY1984 , there's a fine downloadable pdf map of the anthracite region's railroads in the classic era at this link. You'll see Buttonwood Yard on it and the convoluted route that D&H trains took to access it. https://www.trains.com/trn/railroads/maps/scrantons-tangled-steel-web/
Didn't some of this change, in later years. Seem that I recall their gaining some trackage rights. But that might have been after the Penn Central merger? Or even later?
There were so many lines and carriers in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, mixed with trackage rights, line abandonments, bankruptcies and mergers that I can't keep it all straight. Upon approval of CR's formation, the D&H gained trackage rights over CR to access far-flung terminals in Newark, Philadelphia, Buffalo and Pot Yard in Washington, DC, but the D&H was in a weakened state by then and little of this arrangement proved fruitful.
Thanks for all the replies, the info provided will assist me greatly when time & space permits me to design and construct my model railroad layout.
