This one is better without a train (especially standing in the gauge, from a grade crossing public sidewalk or otherwise): Snow falls at sunrise at a frequently-used siding west of the CPKC Minot yard:
From February 2016 at Beaumont, just north of Spartanburg, SC on the NS mainline. The leftmost track is a ramshackle light rail industrial spur. I'm not sure if it's in service. The center tracks are the mainline north and the rightmost track is the W Line to Columbia, 93.6 Miles distant.
A retired RR friend of mine went down to Louisiana last month and brought me back these. This one is at Indianola, MS, Quebec, LA, And Clarksdale, LA.
Old bridge over the Rivière-du-Nord in St-Andre-East, QC. Former CN bridge built by predecessor Canadian Northern. Tracks are long gone by now, even if the bridge still stands. Line used to run to Grenville, QC, and crossed the Ottawa River to Hawkesbury, ON, before continuing westward. Going east, one eventually ends up going through the Mount Royal Tunnel and Central Station. Tracks end now just north of Deux-Montagnes, QC, where the new REM line ends. And might eventually work...
February 1992 at Selma, NC. Good spot to set up a shot with the station, SOU diamond and classic ACL signals on a double track main. Despite a wait, nothing showed up. I've not returned, but I'm quite certain those beautiful signals are long gone.
Well, maybe it's best that we not insert a train here. NYNH&H lift bridge spanning the Cape Cod Canal at Buzzard's Bay, June 1992.
That might get messy. Those massive counterweights (and derails) blocking the tracks will take care of any attempt at inserting a train into the drink...
This bridge can handle a train most of the time. If it is by itself and not trying to cohabitate it with another train. The new BNSF bridge that replaced the old Santa Fe through truss bridge over the Brazos River at Thompsons, Texas. Two of the piers are from the original bridge.
A bumpy siding in front of the NALCO chemical plant in Sugar Land. The nicely groomed ballast of the Sunset Route can be seen on the far right.
From exactly 36 years ago on 04/07/1989 at Clarksburg, WV on the former B&O. That's MD Tower and per Google, it's still there and maybe the structure to the left as well.
Wavy pavement at crossing in Victoria, Texas. August 15, 2008. The UP was still using this track at the east end of the yard in Victoria for making up trains. However, in the next few years, the KCS was rebuilding the old Victoria Sub, aka The Macaroni. This would be the point where the newly rebuilt tracks would connect again to the UP and KCS trains would roll into town on the way to Corpus Christi and beyond.
York England - March 8, 2025 - Was actually harder to get this shot without a train that it was with one
Kalambaka, Greece is the final stop on one branch of a conventional intercity rail line. This was at a grade crossing east of the depot. Notice on the right, the little miniature church on a posts. These are equivalent to what you see in some of the United States where folks leave a cross, wreaths and flowers to memorialize the place where a loved one was killed in an accident. Evidently someone was hit by a train here once upon a time. These were seen along the roads and highways all over Greece. https://maps.app.goo.gl/gzNv6mV74nXfXJx98
The station at Nafplion, Greece. No train today. Probably has not been one for a while. If you follow the tracks on Google, it becomes overgrown in places. https://maps.app.goo.gl/SMnsbK6k9rXf3gMo8
