********EDIT, here is a link to the video added at post 26 *******

Okay, so after I got the sound in my http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=106635 Athearn 2-8-0, one member said he'd like to see sound put in a shay, so I attempted it. Still in the process but 90% done, Just gotta put the speaker in (the one I had installed broke while soldering the wire to the tab)

Anyway here's a couple of pics of the progress..

Remove the pistons (two screws on the bottom)

Remove the coupler (I wrapped tape around it to keep it from coming apart)

Remove the top, (the motor came out with mine, becasue I had already pushed the clips on the bottom of the frame with a screwdriver so the motor mounts were loose.) If yours doesn't come out with the body, just push on the clips with a small screw drive and the motor will pop out.

Motor seperated from body and frame

    Tank Removed.

Prepare the Tsunami 750 for installation (I removed the shrink wrap and heat sink) this makes the decoder much smaller.

The cab will seperate from the rest of the body, just pull up on the rear of it.

Here I started to trim on the body a little, this portion is hidden by the cab, but takes up valuable space, so I removed it.

    completed trimming

    another view of the trimming

as you can see the cab still fits, and there are no signs that anything was modified.

Time to trim the back of the cab to allow for the decoder to be installed and wires to pass

time to isolate the motor, I just unscrewed the tiny screw holding the plastic motor mount to one side of the motor and then rotated it 180 degrees, and put the screw bac in. I then did the same thing on the end with the electrical contacts (it doesn't have a screw, just clips) This isolates the motor from the rail power and also get the motor tabs up to where they are easier to access for decoder install

here I clearanced the sides of the oil tank compartment, there are two little mold marks that run the length of the area where the oil thank cover sat, I ground them all the way down to where the marks didn't show anymore.

here is another shot from a different angle of the grinding I also removed the entire lowered area where the screw would normally hold the oil tank in

here you can see where the grinding was done (this will be unseen when the decoder is installed and the oil tank cover is reinstalled)

test fitting the decoder (you may need to do a little bit of shaving on the sides of the circuit board to get t to fit) This is not the final orientation of the decoder, just used for fitment testing.

as you can see it's a tight fit

nearly flush with the top of the mounting area

at this point I removed all of the wires from the decoder board (be sure to take note of where they all went for soldering them back on) I then used all of the wires from the decoder and soldered them to their corresponding locations on the motor and rail pickup

I used hot glue to mount the LED in place after soldering the corresponding wires to it

put the body and cab back on routed the wires out of the inside, then stuffed the decoder in

trimmed the wires as short as possible leaving very little slack then soldered them directly to the decoder board (be sure to put them back where they came from )

I used some tape to hold the decoder in place while I was soldering all the wires back in place.

Here you can see the routing of the various wires some come from under and wrap up around the back side

a little better view of the wires.

So this is as far as I've gotten so far, been working for two nights now. hopefully it'll be done by the end of the week, depends on how fast I can get another speaker. I put it on the track and it runs great, LED's function and I assume sound, but since I don't have a speaker I can't test it.. :(

This is a work in progress, things may change before it's done.. haha.

there are a couple of places you could put the speaker, but I think I'm going to put it on the underside of the oil tank cover. It would also fit on the side of thecab, but then you could see the top part of the speaker throught the window, so I'd have to tint the windows. haha.

Wow! This is some amazing work here.

I look forward to seeing how it sounds with a speaker.

the little 2-8-0 sounded really good, but it had a slightly larger speaker. so we'll see how this one turns out..

Where are you going to get the actual “Sound” for the Shay?

Those things don’t sound anything like a conventional steam locomotive.

    Popity-popity-popity-poptiy.

The Tsunami he's using is programmable, so if he finds the right sound he should be fine.

I am not sure if the Shay sound is readily available.

the Tsunami directions have some references to a Shay in them, I just gotta figure that part out...

You can not upload sounds into the Tsunami decoders but it does have provisions to modify the sounds for geared steam. You have to buy a the right Tsunami for the application, each has a unique sound set in it.

As long as it is the 826020 Light Logging decoder, he should be fine. It has sound profiles for a Hiesler, Shay, Climax and other small loco's.

Holy moley! I've been off the boards for a while but was planning to stick a Lenz Silver Mini in my Shay (which seems to be the common solution for this tiny beauty). But if this works I will have to rethink this project. Atomic, I hope you can upload a Youtube or something when you're all done. This looks like it's gonna be something else!
