I broke a Life-Like GP38(or -2 if you call it that) it had alway run fine except today I noticed one wheel wasn't equalized sitting on the rails so I took it apart I had a rough time opening the gear case for the wqheels then POP it opened and the gears went every where. I couldn't put them all back in correctly so, I ended up dummifying a Wonderful GP38RS ("mate38s")
A&A, Did you find all the gears and "stuff" that was in the gear case? Did you keep them? It is possible to re-assemble the gear case the same way it was originally assembled. There is a secquence to follow. Do you still have the instruction sheet that came with that or an Identical engine, that has the exploded view showing the replacement parts? Unless you have cut off something or damaged the gear case, you can re-assemble it your self, when you know how. You have two (or more) options: 1. Put it back yourself. 2. E-mail 7600EM-1 and see if he can advise a solution. It is probably not a lost cause.
no, it is somewhat long lost cause. first of all I just pondered over the gears and noticed one tooth was missing, no wonder the thing would just sit there dragging the rear truck. and 2) I done took the can motor out so the clips wouldn't hold it if I tried to re-fix it. Hmmm. I'll try again tomorrow.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------pat
BTW, No It never came with exploded instructions or anything. and no warranty either (no one would take it back it's custom painted and the shell hacked, and backed). Yea the gears are layond in a pile on the layout..errr...workbench
I do feel your pain! I recently dropped an Atlas GP40-2 onto the garage floor from about 5 feet. It absolutely exploded, especially when I attempted to break the fall with my foot and ended up drop-kicking it into a cabinet ! I was able to reattach the trucks to the frame and it still runs great The cab, fuel tank and handrails were damaged heavily though (Atlas says they can send me undecorated replacements). Well Pat, if a gear has lost a tooth, and the engine is a custom job, it probably comes down to ponder time. Is it worth repairing?. Is it worth jacking up the shell and running another chassis under? Is it worth seeing what John advises? If you want to talk it over with John, Reach him at: yellowstone10@hotmail,com Or, if all else fails, you can borrow my ultimate sure fire fixer: a 21 pound sledge!
With Atlas coming out with the GP38 in N-Scale, I'd opt for the 21-pounder Pat! [ 20 March 2001: Message edited by: Maxwell Plant ]
Why pound it with a sledge when you could gather up all the parts, gears, motors, and see if you can sell it on eBay along with some of those other cheap junk cars? Then, when the Atlas comes out, you can reinvest in one of those!!!
I love to work on those things You could always ship it to me in CA and I'll get'er fixed up just fine Just pay the postage and there will be no charge
techichapifan.... that GP40 cost a lot more than my GP38 did!! you lost more. Bachmann probably wouldn't send me a shell if I requested one. watash.... hmm I have a 5 pounder, but I like that (custom Slug) gp38 too well to do that. Maxwell Plant....how much is each GP38 gonna cost?? I'm guessing about 65.00 Benny.... hmm I don't think the market is good for an engine that needs some rebulding (not to mention a door-less long hood!) BarnHill... Hmm I'l get to you when I see if I can't break it worse or fix it agin myself. EVERYONE.... how can I remove the long hood details on a Diesel engine??
True, but it will be the best $65.00 you ever invested in a GP38. I have two LL GP38's myself, they cost me about $25.00 each six years ago. But I tell you this, they hit the scrap bin as soon as my four Atlas GP38's arrive. Three un-numbered Santa Fes and one un-numbered GM&O.
hey max plant... when do you expect to get the GP38s from atlas??? how do you LL gp38's run?? If they are OK units I might be interested to buy them off ya!?!?
I dunno about a fix, but I plan on a 4" high slice of plexi around the perimeter of the entire layout, as to avoid most occurrences like this. Just a tip. *plink, plink*
Hmm I don't know if that would do the wholw trick, especially if the gears jumped about 3 feet and on to the floor , I did find all the gears though .
