So here's Flash showing me around ol' San Antone and we come upon this boxcar. At first, nothing special, just your average doorless 80 foot boxcar  You know, dime a dozen... [IMG]

Until his hawkeye spots it: When was the last time you saw anything Conrail re-lettered for... the NYC? [IMG] [IMG]

Frequently, around here in Central Indiana. That means that it is owned by CSX and CSX runs a lot of trains here on the old Big 4/CR main.

I see that a lot. I'd rather see it as actual NYC, but I'll take what I get.

You see a ton of it here in Atlanta on CSX. Still really a cool catch!

I think they started that a few years ago. There are some lettered NYC and others I think Pennsy. Not sure of the purpose, but it doesn't come close to the original NYC lettering and oval. :(

The relettering of cars to NYC (and PRR) occured when Conrail was split between CSX and NS. The Conrail assets were split roughly in half between the two companies. The cars assigned to CSX were given NYC reporting marks and the cars assigned to NS were given PRR reporting marks. This followed the logic of the route splits where CSX received the northern mostly old NYC routes and NS received the southern mostly old PRR routes. I see lots of the NYC cars and some PRR cars on the CSX line between New Orleans and Mobile.
