I am new to this board and completely new to model railroading. I have had a lot of hobbies over the years including 30 years of building RC scale WWII airplanes, so I love anything scale and historical. I am interested in modeling historic Amtrak routes from the past to present using mountain / canyon scenes like the Zephyr and the Southwest Chief using N scale and Kato products. I have my first addition, the 11 car California Zephyr Kato set coming for Christmas which I plan to just display until I get my track design and complete plan mapped out. Any input on where to start with track and scenery design would be much appreciated.
Welcome aboard your not alone modeling Amtrak there is a few others that model that line and I'm sure you'll meet up with them sooner than later. Well about track and scenery I would take my time and search around the site and net for historical facts on there routes and then see what layout design could help get you there. Your first addition was right on and you'll have lots of happy railroading with your Kato set. And same goes for there track as well. Njoy it's built right in and please keep us up on your progress.
Welcome aboard! I'd say good places to start would be the Layout Design forum we have, perhaps look at some of the layout threads in the N Scale forum and (if you can get your hands on them) some of the layout tour/design annuals put out by Kalmbach/Model Railroader.
Welcome to TrainBoard! As suggested, why don't you hop over to the Layout Design Discussion forum here on TrainBoard? Let folks there know a few basics, such as room shape and dimensions. We have some folks who are great with ideas.
