I am designing a new n scale layout, 9'x6' around the room.

I want to build and hang cabinets across the top and right side. The cabinets would be part of the valance, 24 inches deep, 27 inches high and starting at 67 inches off of the floor. I need to build the cabinets before I build the bench work.

With the rail height (at 0") at about 46 inches and the valance/cabinets starting about 67 inches off of the floor that will give me about 21 inches between the rail top and the bottom of the valance (280 scale feet). I am 5'7 (67") so I should not have any problem ducking under the cabinets. The max rail height will be two or three inches higher. I have a city area and some mountains.

Does that sound like enough room for scenery? Is there a "Typical" gap between rail height and valance?

    Thanks,

    Michael

I have twenty inches between my first and second deck and I have lots of room for scenery, especially in N scale; you'll be fine at 21 inches.
