Work, work and more work! (The employment kind). Goes with the territory of working in the construction field. First summer working statewide, three contracts, two contractors... and me. Busy, busy, busy! Literally nothing modeling related accomplished in over a month.
I have a few problems with it. It isn't as easy to navigate as it used to be. Also, the colors at the top, light blue make it difficult to see the headings. A little darket color would help. Getting into my media, or photos is a lot more difficult also. I suppose these are bugs that could be worked out.
I'm, ok with the colors and layout - I just need to get used to how to do things in the new GUI. For instance, how do I navigate to the most recent post in a Forum Thread? Used to be you just looked up recent posts and clicked the most recent one. Can't seem to find that functionality - but I'm equally sure its user error.
Clicking the title (on the New Posts page) should take you to the first unread (by you) post. In the forum list, see the screenshot for the small round image that will take you to the first unread. Charlie
After living with the changes for a while , I will say that for the most part I like things so far . Have found my pics , and like the way that I can go automatically to the first new post by just clicking the post title . ( works great after marking all forums as read ) . Also haven't seen that problem I used to occasionally get when I logged on only to find that there were no new posts ( when I could clearly see that there were ) . One thing that could be improved , as a few others have mentioned , is the really pale blue line between each post . I would vote for a darker shade or color there . But other than that it's just a matter of getting used to things being a bit different ... Good Job Charlie !
I, too, was away from the site for a while and was unaware of the changes until today. I think it looks pretty darn good. Change is inevitable and I've learned to live with it. When Microsoft dropped support for XP, I made the change to Ubuntu Linux and am liking the move. I was recently informed that Comcast (Xfinity) is going to drop support for personal web pages this October. Do I like that? Not at all, but I will plan to rehost my model RR website somewhere else. In the long run, I may find that it's a vast improvement. Hey, maybe it will be a good time to register a URL for my railroad...
When ebay decided to get even more greedy and invasive, at the end of 2007, I moved to my own web site. It is great to have c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e control! I did not realize what I'd been giving up, as they boiled the frog. I have absolute freedom to create pages on various topics, no second party ads, and save money over the fees I was flushing down their dumper. I may change hosts next time, but that's not hard to do, as I have it all created and triple backed up outside of anyone else's interferences.
It's that way in all of life anymore...the boiling of the frog. Google, evilbait, gummint, MicroSlime, "good-to-go" passes (and you THINK that isn't to track your every move? bWAHAHAHAHA!). That's why I have no on-line banking full stop, no good to go pass, no modern tracking OS, no evilbait...... You have to stop and think sometimes...and if you can see what they are all doing, it's scary.
Relax everyone, we old dogs can be taught new tricks. We all learned how to use the original board. We can certainly learn the new format.
Oh, good! "Home" and "Forum" have been replaced by one button, "Trainboard" with no FF redirect blocks. Thanks, Charlie! Dave
Stop grumbling, guys, and let Charlie and the team do their magic. Upgrading a forum software is no simple task (just try upgrading the OS on your PC, while making sure that you don't lose your data and all your old software still works... ) Now go back to chasing those dang kids off your lawn. Grumpy energy better spent there!
Oh absolutely, I still drop by various shops around the state on my travels. Just picked up a few old craftsman wood freight car kits couple weeks ago. Folks, just keep posting and browsing the forums. The new format will grow on you. Charlie has a day job and I, for one, know how it is to work a long week. You get home and really don't want to lift a finger for anything else..... give it time!
Getting used to the new look already. Only thing I would like is a more obvious separation of posts. The thin blue line is not very visible. Thicker line, or black would work. If it is possible to change?
Just another learning curve. It will take a while and then I will be use to it. The colors are definitely different. But as long as the spell check works when I post a reply, I will just fine with the new one.
Ok, I took a deep breath and let the steam drop in the boiler and the smoke has finally cleared from my ears. The steam safety valve seems to be quiet for the moment. I'm still looking for one feature I really enjoyed. I could sign into to TB and go directly to the activity of my friends. Allowing me to keep up with their posts and the latest happenings. Now I don't have a friends list. A Follow and being Followed list. Heck I'm not a leader and I don't follow very well. I go my own way. If I want to find out what they are up to I have to search them out and that isn't going to happen. The colors are ok but the headings are hard to read. Instead of white may I suggest you make the print black. Then some of us with diabetic eyes can see the darn things. I've supported TB in the past and reluctantly I'm not able to as my fiances and medical co-pays are killing me. Anyway, just my two cents and yes I take change. Well, enjoy when and where you can. Typically I hate change. If it works why break it?
As previously stated, we had to move. Quality of the old software and their upgrades had seriously degraded, plus there was a huge security hole plaguing us. Different software has different capabilities- Or we'd be seeing them suing each other for copyright issues. We're doing what we can with this new software. Most folks like it, and our activity levels have jumped up significantly since the change.
Your activity levels have jumped up because of all the discussion on how to fix log-ins, how to fix avatars, how to fix signatures, how to open Cattle Car, issues with IE 11, and do we like of not like this new forum software? Take those out...how much has it changed? Opinion. Dave
