Not just vetrans but anyone in your life from girlfriend to parents, vetrans or personal heros. On the Grey and Grandure I plan: 1) A "Memory Fence" made of computer memory. It will be to my father. "Frank Goodenough" who taught me how to think creatively without fear. He taught: "People who follow the herd will get as far as the herd. It is safe. It is comfortable. They have lots of company. He would stop and let that just hang in the air. 2) I will have several mountain peaks dedicated to different groups or ideals. a) Vetrans - With a flag on top b) Hope - May look vaguely like an open pair of hands c) Our enemies (will look like a certain hand jesture with extended finger). d) My first wife who died at 35 3) There will be statue of some sort in the town square to the fire / police / EMTs 4) A major focal point town on the GandG will be named "Long Train. Bob Woods will be the station master. 5) Several of the "Named Trains" and industries or stores will be based on handles of people at Trainboard (with thier permision). What do you think? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!
All very nice sentiments, Steve. Like so many, my businesses are mostly named after family and friends (and pets ) Old idea, I know, but it works. My next layout will be bigger, and I have to be careful not to leave anyone out...
Steve: I have several businesses, sidings and a yard named for model RRing friends and family members. There are also 2 items on my layout that I consider to be memorials: 1. "Roe's Garden", dedicated to my late father, H. Roe Hawkey, behind a house that looks a little like the summer home he grew up in. 2. "Grampa's Station", a small plain block building modeled after the Delphos Ohio NKP depot. It is placed along the old NKP Main that goes around the Peoria and Pekin Union East Peoria Yard. It's my remembrance of my maternal grandfather, Walter Terrance Clark of Delphos Ohio, a NKP engineer who ran Bershires out of Lima Ohio. I got my first train, a Lionel steamer that made real smoke, 3 cars and a caboose for my 6th birthday. That Christmas, Grampa helped increase my rolling stock to 9 cars! He died of a heart attack on the job the following summer. Mods: I'll second Steve's request to move to the Inspection Pit, if posters play nice. I think it will open the thread up for more posts about remembering and/or honoring ideals, friends, and loved ones.
In the past, I've named a few locations on layouts for significant model railroading friends. One of those fellows used to do a few things such as the late John Allen. He'd hide a few little trinkets around the layout. Or create a tiny scene that his friends would recognize. Then wait for someone to notice. His sense of humor. Boxcab E50
Of course my railroad is named for the most loyal friend a guy could ever have (God I miss that lug). My parents bar if Flagstaff, the Elbow Room (now Crazy Bill's) will be there along with Ms. Stacey's preschool and Eilene's Blue Rose Bakery for Xs that still have a special place in my heart regaurdless of our break up. Also I will proudly run this Grand Canyon boxcar in memory of Bob "Longtrain" Wood.
My layout will have very little online business, but I want to honor my late grandfathers. One was a career railroader, and one was a steelworker. I also want to do somethig on the layout to remember all the great Moffat Route railfan trips Alaska GP49 and I made. And to think I originally didn't care 2 hoots about that area? mg: Mike, thanks for the great times!
I've named a few industries for friends. Also streets are named for friends! cannery brewery printing for a friend who worked their, and many more. Browse through my RIalbums. Wolfgang
I've been naming businesses after family and friends. I dedicated a bridge to Bob Woods. There are various places where I have little markers that people might or might not notice. There's a plaque on Rose Wharf, for example, marking nephew Adam Rose's winning entry in the 1731 Cod Tournament--which is about the time the Rose family arrived in the US. We also use landmark buildings such as Jordan Marsh and Filene's in Boston.
We had a CapCity member pass away a couple days after a show a few years ago. We're only now getting through helping his family sell his model railroad equipment collection (I put in a couple hundred dollars for my purchases, and other members have gone into the $1000 range for more equipment; he had nice stuff, and we want the family to get a fair deal). Anyway, one of the modern office building structures that I have yet to build on my city modules will be named the Reineke Building in his memory, and since he worked for UPS, there'll be a UPS Store in the first floor.
On my former HO scale Oklahoma & North Eastern RR, I invented a subsidiary line in the Joplin (MO) area to service shippers once served by Frisco. I named it Joplin District Terminal (reporting marks JDT, which are the same initials as my youngest son). I painted up an SW7 in red, with JDT reporting marks and the number 4692 (denoting my son's birthday- April 6, 1992). Since there is already a Kyle railroad, and another fallen flag with the reporting marks MKT (which covers my older son, Matthew Kyle Thompson), I thought James needed some recognition on my layout. It even got him involved in running trains. I still have that switcher, all it needs is a new layout on which to run.
On the layout I am planning on building, I am going to have a town, a jct, a siding, and a river named after significant people in my life. I am sure I will name some businesses or other things like a yard or even maybe a dock or something like that but nothing is finalized yet. Nothing is final until I name it.
I have named rivers and businesses for people. I have also used the initials for my family to be the initials for both the railroad and the towns.
On my approximate 1/3rd mile added to the Seaboard's Charleston - Savannah mainline, the main road crossing and associated buildings will be named Corbett's Crossing after my good friend and model RR mentor - Lou Corbett. My wife's maiden name will be commemorated by the longest spur off the SAL main and the area where my jointly owned ACL-SOU branch serves two small industries will be named Davis Neck after a current good buddy.
As I model mostly prototype scenes I really can't change the names of the buildings to honor a friend. However a few friends have stuck my name on a building on their layout. Oh well,......
My onetrak module Timford Junction, well, it's obvious: I named it after Tim, my son. My daughter has a more difficult name, Hedwig, but fortunately she couldn't speak out here own name properly and said something like 'Higi'. Therefore, I have the city of Higisboro. My wife can be found in Stonefield (her name is Petra, and in Greek that means rock or stone), and in the small module East Tuckerville: she comes from the eastern part of our country where the inhabitants are called 'tukkers', and I have named the grain elevator after a village and the coal dealer after her maidenname (and then translated in some sort of way). Businesses have names of former New Haven VIPs like Mellen, Morgan and McGinnis, or the name of my cat, or (in the case of the Sydewalk Bakery) a translation of the name of a large Dutch bakery company.
Good question. If it fits, it goes in. For the time being, for every women who has ever thrown me out Only kidding. I actually bear them no ill will and commend them on their clarity of thought.
Mark, that picture is now making its way around my office. There are giggels and guffaws coming from everywhere.
Thanks for the kind words, Hemi. Funny thing is I almost bought you a tent to put on your next layout, but wasn't sure if you would really like it. I think you have a couple of scenes that could be interesting. A couple railfans camping 28' from the tracks or a pickup parking where it is clearly posted that it shouldn't be...down a steep embankment! Yes, we had some good times. I miss having a railfan buddy to search out new places. One day you will have a tribute on my layout! Probably a scene like mentioned above.
Great subject, since the B&M N layout is based on the prototype, there are only prototype names and industries. However on Tina's three rail O, we thought it fun to include the whole family. The road in the center is IL Rt. 73, (the year I was born) The road next to the gas station is IL Rt. 71 (Tina's birth year) The Gas station is Seward Garage (My father-in Laws garage) Look carefully at the gas station and you will see Jessica our red Jeep Wrangler. The model looks exactly like our real one. The White house is Cheryls B&B (Tina's Sister) The first store front is going to be Supervalue (Local IL grocery) The second store front is JTW Hobbies (self explanitory) The church is Northland Baptist Church (Tina's Brother-In-Law) The Park may be called Elmer Harms memorial named after Tina's grandfather who was an Army Air Corp mechanic durring WWII. The memorial will be a P-47 painted bronze with a plack that states "He kept em fighting." Other industries will be Stricktly New England gifts (My Mom's company) Trans-A-Tronics Computer Solutions (My Dad's Company) Other things are named after family and friends as well. This gives the town it's own history and draws in our family.
