    Morning all,

I was just reading about the guys in the N scale forum complaining about the high price of cars. I bought a used 60 foot reffer in G yesterday for $60.00 and could not believe that the prices have climed so much. I was told by the owner of the shop that USA has gone up 10% across the board and that the car I bought was $120.00 new.

Well I wonder if the car makers relieze that us poor working stiffs cannot afford that kind of money for the products. I hope they realize we have to make the house and car payments and feed the kids once a month. If we don't do that everyone gets a little crankie. So it looks like its used G scale equipment for me or just go live in my car until my railroad is finished.

Prices are way to high. That’s one reason my G scale railroad has grown so slowly. I went to a train show yesterday in Erie PA. The prices on HO my old scale were drooping a bit compared to that of HO here in NY. How ever G scale for the most part was very high. I will say I got quite a deal on 2 stations. I got one for $25 by model power and one by Aristo for $30 and that was a good deal. There was one G scale set there, the older Bachmman and welp it was $150. Long ago I started to build my buildings from scratch because of the cost of the kits. Then I found that some of mine look better then the store bough ten ones. But you know there is something wrong with things when a boxcar cost more then a switch. HHHHmmmmm……..

Here is some shots of my scratch built buldings:

Thanks for the photos. There are always good ideas to be found in pictures even when they are of the simplest subject. I'm always interested in the indoor variety.

The manufactured structures are ALWAYS way to expensive. Any scale. Don't know why that is. So I scratch build ALL my buildings. I have about 20 on the layout and I don't think I've spent $250.00 on the lot of them. As a plus, they are all the correct scale size. Piko buildings are well done but their 'foot print' is far to small to be realistic.

Rolling stock prices in G scale are not that bad over all. I regularly buy good quality HO and N products for our club's weekly raffle and $35.00 or $40.00 for a box car is just stupid. I'll pay $100.00 for a great G scale box car and actually have something to show for it. Keep in mind the size of the market here.

That's why G scale is the fastest growing part of the hobby.

Look out though. The US dollar is in the tank because of that countries HUGE debt so anything made abroad, China for example, will soon cost a lot more. Look for 20% increases.

Too high, but then this is a choice of the seller ... i.e., what the markup is ... as well as the wholesaler/manufacturer. The higher the recommended retail rpice, the deeper the discount even the local guy can give to attract customers. Look at the current pricing and cuts on "off name" Aristo SD45s. Wow, one can't complain about $169 for a monster like that. For $169 for an undec, one can think about really doing G kit bashing and decorating for those rare roads (Utah, etc.) If you think G is high, check out the newer HO models, with plastic engines (yes they have goodies) bumping up agaist $200 even discounted.

BTW, I am looking for good good ideas on an indoor modern switching road ...i.e., a super shelf road. Any ideas?
