This looks like a great forum for discussing all aspects of model railroading. Wish I had found it sooner. My first reason for being here is that I need some advice dealing with a Peco wye. I'm attaching the turnout motor, but when I do the motor stalls and cannot move the points. I've tried two different motors with the same result. :( Until I solve this trains cannot move.

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Not sure what scale you are modeling. You might wish to try posting in the forum for that appropriate size.

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Peco switches work the same whether they are HO or N scale. They have a type of locking device that holds the points firmly against the rail. A spring loaded mechanism. I don't know what motor you used but I can assure the OLDER Atlas type of switch machines, doesn't have the kick to unlock and move the points. Check the Peco packaging, as I believe they suggest a switch motor that will do the job. If I can find a link for you I will bring it back here.

I gave up on the electric motors and use hand throws instead. I have a friend who use choke cables to throw the switch and move the points.

    Here we go: http://www.fiferhobby.com/html/caboose_industries_tortoise_n_.html
You will find the newer Atlas switch machines, Tortioise and a Peco under the table Switch Motor. You can't go wrong ordering from Fifer Hobby.

Best of luck with your project.

Hi Train Builder, Welcome to the TrainBoard, we're glad you've come on board. I've used Peco N-Scale switches for 20+ years, including wyes, but have never used a machine so can't help you directly. However, your problem seems odd because I've never felt any resistance from the toggle spring when I flipped the points with my index finger. Since you say you've tried two different motors, I suspect the problem may be with the linkage between the throw bar and machine. Two possibilities come to mind: 1) the linkage is flexible and bends slightly so it drags on the roadbed or wooden base when the machine is activated; or 2) the linkage is flexible and springy so the activating motion from the machine is absorbed before it reaches the throw bar, like an automobile spring. Please let us know what you find out because this is an odd problem that all of us Peco users could benefit from.

I'll limit myself to another welcome, as I can't speak to Peco. But we are glad you've joined us!

I'm using the Peco PL-10 motor for the Peco turnout.

Even having dismounted the turnout from the layout and holding it in my hand, the motor still cannot move the linkage. There was no problem or visible binding when the turnout was on the layout and I operated it by hand.
