    Hi all,
I've just joined TB. I'm 33 with two young kids and have recently purchased an HO scale layout that was otherwise going to be thrown out. It was the ideal way for me to start modelling as the initial costs of setting up a trainset seem to be quite prohibitive. After I receive my replacement power supply from Hornby for the controller this week, I can test out the track to see how well it works. I have a few trains stashed away from childhood that I hope still work.

I've always dreamt of being a serious modeller. For now raising family and paying off a mortgage is the higher priority but at least I have something to tinker with to keep the dream alive.

I've attached a pic of the trainset for comments/suggestions. There are (hopefully only) minor repairs that need to happen such as replacing the bent trees etc.

I'd appreciate any advice on where to find discounted modelling supplies in Sydney, NSW or online. ;)

I've seen that you've already noticed there is a significant Aussie contingent here, so you're in good company. The setup you stumbled upon does look like a good start, lots of potential for running and experimenting with adding scenery. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Hi Goldmouse, Welcome to the TrainBoard, happy to have you on board. Looks like you lucked into a good find. It should be perfect for tinkering with your "stashed" stuff, and with modifying the scenery to suit your artistic talents with little or no further investment except time. However, I see a major challenge, that of determining whether a non-running locomotive is due to having been stashed since your youth, or one or more faults in the track work. Though that's why we're here to answer questions, give advice, and otherwise alleviate your frustration...and at no cost. LOL

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Glad you could rescue this layout. Looks far too nice to have been in danger of being trashed.

Thanks guys. And good point about the potential for the trains or the track to have faults. Only time will tell I guess.

It strikes me that, once you have a power source to connect, it would be simple enough to take a multimeter (Or the like) around the layout and check the track. Shouldn't be too much of a chore given the apparent size.

Well it's now been 15 working days since ordering my power supply from hornby. So far I'm unimpressed by the service because it's still not here.
On the plus side though, I recruited my brother and his handyman skills to build me a set of legs for this layout to sit on. So I have a layout at a good height, trains and rolling stock to run on it but not yet any power supply.
I'll give them till the end of this week then get on the blower. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Finally have power! It has taken a long time and finally have up and found an electronics store to buy one from. I did have the name of the website which I paid money to and failed to receive my product from but I've just read the policy on talking about web-retailers. If you want to know which website I think you should avoid, just message me.
