    Hello webwiz,
It is possible to do this, but the loco will stop all of a sudden as soon as it hits the dead track. (30mpg to a dead stop) not decelerate as it should do. There is another way which turns on the red light when the train drives into the section, but you must control the train via a controller to a dead stop. If you require more info on this, let me know.

    cheers Paul

Welcome to the TrainBoard WebWiz! Are we talking about DCC, or DC?

Paul is right about you wanting to "flip" a switch. If you are controlling your layout by the signals, that is complicated to me. But, if you mean to stop the train as a safety measure when the red light comes on, there might be a way.

Lionel had a setup where, like if two trains were approaching the same crossing, one would slow and stop, until the other got clear, then would start up and go again. I have selenium rectifyers that when I want to coast to a stop, the rectifyers "decay" from 12 v (or whatever speed setting) down to almost 0 volts, so stop the train gradually.

If another train passes into an occupied block, going the opposit direction, the short would light the red signal light (by a relay), but it would also cause both engines to lock up solid, like Paul says.

We usually wire the signals to indicate turnouts, and blocks, but does not control the trains. You could isolate one track from the rest of the layout by using a multi-contact switch, that would disconnect the isolated track from the layout power supply, and connect it to another power supply that would start slowing the voltage to the isolated track and turn on the red light all at the same time, but that is a difficult way to go about it. There is probably several ways, we just have to think it out a bit.

Tell us a little more about it, or email me, we'll talk. :D (Click on the little "Mail" icon at the top row of my post window here for the address, see?)

Ok well i will tell u a little more, i am a bit of a begginer and u see i want it so that when i turn the signal to red as the train approachs the station that the train will slow down to a halt or just stop but like u say to be realistic it would have to gradually stop  so really wahtever is possible and whatever is suitable or quite easy to manage would be great if u need any more info well u can just post it up here or give us an email!! :D

    Hi,
One other way is to use REED switches which are very small and are inserted in the track. One is placed quite a bit before the signal, and the other just before it.
On the base of each loco is placed a small magnet which activates the reed switch and would put the RED light on, you could then slow the train down and stop it at a depot/etc. When starting the loco up again, it would move forward and activate the REED switch (Which is just in front of the signal) and in turn would make the signal turn Green and off you go.
    Hope this helps.

    Paul
