I'm an N scaler. Trying to find a photo I've seen of a Southern Alco DL107 (probably CNO & TP) going through Johnson City, Tennessee. Late forties, I guess. Commentary on photo was about Southern being first to fully "dieselize". 3/4 frontal view. Loco was in the original sylvan green and white livery. I think it was in freight service, which is what I'm really after. Were the DL 107 or DL109s used in freight service by Southern or CNO&TP? Does anyone know where (web site) I saw this photo? I'm worn out from looking. Can't find. Thanks.

The Southern had 3 DL109 A units and 3 DL110 B units which were use on the Southern passenger train with one pair assinger to the Ponce de Leon. The Alco's were Scrapped in June through August 1954 with 6 PA-3s taking their places. The picture is of Dl109 6401 with No.46 the Tennessean in June 1950. 6400 and 6401 were the pair on the Ponce de Leon and were also CNO&TP ,while 2904 was Southern, but they were probably replaced on the train with E-units, explaining the presence on other trains.

Actually the CNOTP units were one DL-107 and one DL-108 from before the war. The New Haven were the first to officially class their like units 'dual service', and had only the DL-109. So, when the Southern and GM&O got War Production Board permission to get new ones, they had to get the 109 (and Southern had to have unique DL-110s) in order to get around the no new passenger power during wartime restriction. What differences there were between the 107/109 and 108/110 I do not know, but they didn't show from the outside. But, for the record, you're both right about the correct designation.

And Railbird, you have good taste. That said, I don't recall ever seeing a pic of these in their Southern colors. But if I run across one, I'll bring a link here!

DL-109's are such pretty loco's! Awhile back Walthers had one for maybe 20 dollars, but they sold out. I saw some avaliable on some sites though in the Southern's early "Pelican" scheme.

Thanks everyone. I found the photo I was looking by Google search for "DL107, Johnson City, Tennessee". Like duh, makes sense! Actually, the reason I wanted to see photo again was I have N scale Walthers DL107 #6400 and I wanted "justification" for freight useage. I think what I remembered was the freight car sitting on siding in photo and in my CRS diseased state, I thought the DL107 was pulling freight. Appears DL107s are pulling a couple of RPO units and 4 or 5 passenger units (hard to tell). Bummer! I guess I'll have to fall back on the "it's my railroad, I can run what I want philosophy". At N Trak setups, it's hard to pull that off though!! Thanks again.

Actually, on further research, there were two 107/108 sets before the war and one 109/110 set during the war. And you can do better than that. Tell them the Southern felt compelled to run freight today because they wanted to reassure the War Production Board that their new diesels really were 'dual service'!

Actually you could couple them up behind some freight units and claim that they're "d.i.t." (dead in transit) being returned or sent to/from some inspection point off your modelled division.

Virginian - Don't think I've ever heard of the "Pelican" scheme - can you provide more info?

Virginian Railway - Thanks for the photo. I know that was the original scheme for passenger diesels delivered in the 1940's but I didn't know that it had a nickname.
