I want to build a winter/christmas layout for my wifes curio cabinet. Small space however, 40x18 i feel like pushing to 20 or 21 will not over hang too far. I build dioramas and models more than i am into trains, however having a functioning line is motivation enough to learn a new hobby. I really am looking for advice if this can work at all as well as which locomotive engine and car types will work. I dont want to buy track, engine and power to find it doesnt perform decently. Derailments can happen sure but dont want to fix loco every 10 minutes. Goodness well i think i should leave it at that.
Thank you to anyone with patience to read my monologue

Hi K4..., welcome, glad to have you on board. Your spatial limitations suggest N-Scale at the max, though Z-Scale would be a better fit. Suggest you scroll down past all the 1:1 forums to the model forums. Then scroll down to the Z-Scale forum and talk with those folks. I'm seeing some wonderfully detailed layouts being created. Your experience with dioramas should fit right in, and with all the engines and cars on the market, you're going to be in hog heaven.

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

What you describe we call a micro-layout. It can be done and made to run very well.

Ive looked at several sites, z scale seemed like a better fit but more expensive vs n scale a much tighter fit but a little more price friendly. Have i not found the good stores or am i close in my observation? Im all for more options with z scale if i dont have to put my entire bonus into it, this project is shaping up to be awesome however

Welcome to Trainboard. Derailments are typically caused by bad trackwork
