I am new here and currently do not own any model trains. I got interested in train models after visiting local show with my kids. I live in an apartment so I am thinking of building one of the micro layouts in a box so I can easily store it away when not in use. But that's a distant future for me as I want to learn first to avoid some of the mistakes that probably a lot of noobs like me do when they start.

    Alex,

Are you from North Jersey (= New York), South Jersey (= Pennsylvania), or the Jersey shore?

Hey Welcome. I'm from Rochelle Pk. But due to circumstances beyond my control, I'm now in Lakewood. While in RP, I built my layout in an extra bedroom in my apt. If I ever get another apt, I plan on a narrow N Scale layout around the back of my living room. Like 12-18" wide.

Getting into the hobby through the kids sounds great! As a suggestion, you could always try making some dioramas to try out different scenery (and to be able to display trains you pick up) or look around for a club nearby. Have fun!
