I have been watching the series Hell On Wheels. Does anyone know where it was shot and anything about the equipment?
If you have On Demand through your cable company, check there. Comcast has several "making of" episodes that show how the locomotive was built (it's not authentic), and several other bits about the show. Great series. AMC hit a home run with this one and The Walking Dead.
Awesome series. Even if the equipment isn't authentic it looks really cool. I really like the pinstriping on the exterior of the private car. I wish I could do that in N scale. Trains, liquor and violence , what more could you ask for.
While I love the show, and it is the second highest rated in AMC history... For the most part it is all movie magic, as Tracey said, the locos are primarily custom built props, and have mechanisms to make them look like they are puffing smoke...etc. In many, not all, scenes with the locos in them, there are usually boxes or wagons or loading dock or something similar in the foreground to "hide" the details that are not there. AS for location of the filming, most of the filming was done in the foothills near Calgary Canada...
