I am changing some heavweight passenger cars to microtrain truck/couplers which are adjustable in length. What is a protypical distance between cars. Should this distance be modified depending on your minimum track radius that you are running.

Welcome to trainboard I hope you enjoy this site as much as I and many members do. As for your question I would have to say you are limited by your radii, if you have only tight curves if your spacing is close the cars are likely to hit and derail. On my layout I have had to have a space between cars for this very reason. I have a curve on my layout that is only 10 inches in diameter.
hope this answers your question I'm sure there are others here who have some suggestions for you.
    Once again welcome to Trainboard

As mentioned, spacing is needed for clearance on curves. I would test the curves on the layout with two of the cars before making final changes.
Also, if spacing appears to be too much for normal appearance then add 'Diaphragms' between the cars. There was a very good article in the March-April 1999 edition of N-Scale magazine on how to make them from black construction paper.
"American Limited" also sells a kit for N-scale which requires some patience to put together.
    American Limited

I've used both and think they do add realism to a string of passenger cars or to a ABA set of E or F units.
