I am looking for 5 or 6 UNDECORATED N Scale Pullman type Heavy Eight Passenger Cars, or more specifically as follows: 4 X 10 Window/Double Window/Coach/Parlor cars 1 X Diner 1 X Observation Car I really like the Micro Trains stuff and they do make a lot of the above cars; HOWEVER, very few Undecorated varieties from what I have seen of their web site. I would prefer to have them undecorated so I can paint them to suit my layout. I am not hard and fast on Micro Trains BUT want very good quality rolling stock. Any suggestions as to where I an get what I am looking for?
Honestly, there are only a handful of heavyweight cars on the market, and other than brass, the Micro-Trains cars are among the best, especially for the price.
90% of my rolling stock (which isn't a lot at the moment) is Micro Trains - they are good. Trying to find these things is like looking for a needle in a haystack though so I may have to get them ordered through someone if I am to get them at all. With that being said, I did see a New Haven 5 Car Heavy Weight Set available from one business. If worse comes to worse, I may have to go that route.
What road are you looking at modeling? Also http://micro-trains.com has a set of Pullman cars for sale
There are several techniques to remove original paint. Many members have posted different ways on Trainboard over the past years. Try searching in different scale forums, also someone may chime in and point you in the right direction.
bremner, I'm not modelling any road, the layout is entirely fictional which is why I wanted the undecorated cars. Thanks for the link as well, they were the ones I was referring to above and will most likely be what I do get if I can't get undecorated ones.
Several places I checked were all sold out of undecorated models. I would suggest deciding on a base paint color for the car such as a Tuscan red or a dark green and going from there. Many roads used those colors on their passenger cars. That would eliminate the need to strip and repaint the entire car. You could then remove as much of the lettering as you liked and apply your own.
Even the undecorated cars I have (12-1 sleepers) are Pullman Green. I would suggest finding cars with a minimum of lettering and work from there.
The MTL undec parlor car is item # 143 00 001. The MTL undec observation car is item # 144 00 001 or 144 00 002. The MTL undec coach car is item # 145 00 001. The MTL undec diner car is item # 146 00 001. Given that most dealers can't be named or linked to on this forum, do a search on Micro Trains and the item numbers and you'll find these cars shown as in stock at a few dealers.
Not sure if they'll suffice, but if cost is a concern you might want to check out the six-axle heavyweight cars imported by Rivarossi, Model Power, Lima and others in the late '70s and early '80s. I run these on my railroad; M-T's six-axle trucks adapt perfectly to them and they operate flawlessly.
Adrian, Thanks and that was my second option if I couldnt find the undecorated cars. Point353, Thank you, this is appreciated. When I couldn't find them in the conventional places, I did go to the MT site. The only one listed (that I wanted) was the Parlor Car and it say's to contact the Retailer. I looked at a few of the MT retailers and they were all out of stock. I think the only way I maybe able to get them is to have a retailer get them on my behalf. As only one of the cars I want was listed on the MT site, I have contacted them about the availability of the other cars. Cost isn't as important as trying to get the MT cars; however, if I cannot find the MT undecorated then I will definitely have alook around for the models you have suggested. As it stands now though, I may have to buy a "set" and change the lettering on them.
Just for info, this is something like what I am planning: Not settled on a name yet, just had to put some thing on it.
Okay so I have gone with these Micro Train Cars, one undecorated and a 5 car set: I bought the undecorated to use as a practice car for painting or more to the point, pulling it apart for painting. If someone can give me a guide for removing the windows and "shell", that'd be very much appreciated. Tried googling a "how to" but got everything and anything BUT how to remove the roof and shell and windows, all of which I am assuming will have to come for painting.
