The Harlowton depot has been repainted in the classic Milwaukee colors circa 1940 - dark grey and white . The depot is also now open to the public for the summer. The interior has been cleaned up and repainted in the traditional interior cream green. The building looks very nice.
Ain't it funny how all these, "new" configurations of RED all seem to oxidize (fade) to the same pink. Yet, if you pick up some, "barn paint" and use it, you'll have a nice brown red that will last forever. One of my city relatives found this out years back and was touting it at a family get together. After painting the house trim over and over, only to watch it turn pink within two years, he had discovered this miracle "brown-red barn paint". He was an electrical engineer, so me, my fellow hick relatives and the former railroader that lived next door didn't have the heart to tell him that his barn paint was just rust and linseed oil. It couldn't oixidize much more
So many people don't know about paints.... Weather out there in Montana can be to extremes. Sun, wind, rain, snow, blistering hot, to well into subzero... Latex and other attempts just don't hold up. Boxcab E50 Far from home right now.
I don't recall what they used this time for paint. I've never liked Imron. Doesn't blend easily on repaints, so you end up doing much larger areas. Prefer acrylic enamel or acrylic urethanes. Boxcab E50
I too would love to see a photo the depot! The E-70 looks great again! Just like when we first painted her! I sure miss being able to drive amongst the ghosts of lines west.
For the 1st time I'm actually closer to MT than you are Hemi. :tb-tongue: Good to hear your enjoying your tour, except I know I won't be seeing any of those awesome ghost threads from you. :tb-hissyfit: I will be in Missoula July 4th evening, going up to Polson to see my folks, can't wait to be home again.......
The Harlowton depot looks great! The pink and orange is all gone. It required over $1,500.00 worth of good primer to cover up the orange and pink paint! I will get photos next time I am in Harlowton. In addition the interior is just about finished as well; the interior is being painted in Milwaukee interior pale green. The depot has new electrical service and, of course, a new roof was put on the building a couple of years ago. The depot is open this summer Thursday through Sunday in the afternons for visitors (and yes, the bathroom facilities also work!). A crew of over twenty people spend three weekends and one full week repainting the building.
It's great to read of the community effort to make those repairs! Hopefully everyone locally understands the value of what they have as far as area history. Boxcab E50
Harlowton depot photo OK, Here we go. I will try to load a photo of the newly painted Harlwton depot. If I don't make it, well, I'm not exactly computer literate. I attached two photos of the depot (I think) - I hope someone can put them up for me. Thanks, John
