It was 30 years ago today that the little town of Westfield IL was visited by the American Freedom Train! Here is the freshly painted SP GS-4 #4449 rounding the curve past Seward Garage. The observation car has just pulled past IL Rt. 73 past a great looking 1976 VW Bug.
A small crowd has gathered at the old CB&Q station to watch the AFT pull in from its short trip from Rockford IL. Once the cars clear the crossing, the SP Daylight will uncouple from its train and get water. A windy shot taken by a local news helicopter. The BN local switcher has just uncoupled two of the display cars and shoved them into the Westfield siding. The CB&Q era water tower is no longer functional, otherwise the GS-4 would have taken on water there. After a few days, the AFT will leave Westfield south to Galesburg IL. I hope you all enjoyed my fiction! Every July Tina and I set up the K-Line AFT set she bought me. It is the most expensive set I own, but the money was worth it as the GS-4 is my favorite steam locomotive and I have great memories of the Bicentennial. HaveAHappy4thofJuly!
