Hi friends In the July issue of MR you will find a photo of the Con-Cor GS-4. Looks like CC made a couple of mistakes, the lead truck is the same one used on the S2 4-8-4 and rather than paint the pilot Daylight orange with silver stripes they painted the whole pilot silver. I'm hoping the model Con-Cor sent to MR is a pilot model and the finished version has the correct features but I have a feeling its not. If this does show up on the final model they are easy fixes but CC should have checked the prototype a little closer. At least the locomotive shell and tender looks correct.
Bob Ref model photo in July 2002 MR page 30 =================== Well they have the potential to get it right Look at undecorated pilot on the preproduction sample here: ===== http://all-railroads.com/instock/images/ngs4frnt.jpg ===== It appears to have "ridges" to represent the (stainless steel ?) strips on the prototype pilot. It could be tricky to duplicate the appearance of the prototype pilot seen here -- probably would involve painting it all Daylight orange and then (printing ?) just the strips silver ======= http://members.aol.com/cutthebag/tucson8.jpg ======= BTW the all-silver pilot is OK on the black GS-4 as shown on SP 4430 here: http://espee.railfan.net/jpgs/byron_bostwick/byron_bostwick_sp-steam-gs-4-4430.jpg ======= I'll email a copy of this to Con-Cor eNjoy [ 11 June 2002, 03:17: Message edited by: dbn160 ]
I would (like you said Don) paint the pilot all orange then with a tooth pic and some silver enamel I would paint the silver steel pieces. After seeing the picture in Model Railroader I am wishing I had gotten a set now!!!!!!!!
Well I got to see one of these beauties today and all I can say is : WOOOOWWWW!!!! We held it up next to a brass GS-4 and it looks much better (tons of rivit detail and walkway tread, etc.) Also, the "cow catcher" was painted correctly. If you like N scale steam, you NEED one of these.
Yes the pilot is painted correctly on the final version released. Jim Conway said in an e-mail that the model sent to Model Railroader had some mistakes and they knew it when it was sent. I can't wait to see mine.
Yes and even though the locomotives are sold out Rio Grande Hobbies are still taking orders for the set that includes the locomotive and about 6 cars.
