Hi Just joined and interested in freelance modelling on On30 with DCC in the typical small UK home. Still in the ideas stage for what will likely be a micro layout. I know DCC is overkill for micro layouts but I love technology and there are some interesting low cost DCC solutions. George
Welcome aboard and DCC is not overkill at all. I have a small HO layout and the quality of DCC sound decoders has totally renewed my interest in model railroading. I also enjoy smaller layouts because I can pay more attention to detailing scenes.
Hi George, Welcome. I think DCC would be an excellent choice, regardless of layout size. I would convert to DCC were it not for my age (80), 35 year investment in N-Scale (68 years in model trains), and being extremely comfortable designing DC circuits. DCC would give you the freedom to operate locomotives as their prototype counterparts operate, i.e. individually controlled while performing their assigned duties. With DC, you must ensure the proper control panel switches are correctly positioned, and/or ensure you have every power-routing turnout aligned correctly to provide power to a locomotive that may be many feet removed from the power source. DCC would give you the freedom to operate a second locomotive independently while in the same area of track, e.g. yard, though performing different duties. (I must stop before I convince myself to convert to DCC )
@Eagle2 As I'm freelancing I've not nailed down a region, I like small industrial layouts based around mining or forestry but the use of steam engines is a given. I do like the look of the Colorado area but size limits me to a more likely small depot at a mine head/saw mill/small town. Still spit balling ideas.
