Hi all, just found the site after making contact with someone who is a member on here. Looks like an excellent resource, thanks for pointing me to it Jim! Many years ago I was doing MRR but in HO scale. I now live in the UK so am rather space constrained in comparison with some of the areas that you guys in the US have access to. The area that I will be using is in the loft of our house, and is roughly 14 by 7. The walls are not vertical as they are the inside of the roof and so slope inwards. It is proving to be quite a challenge to figure out the best way to make the best use of the space. I am in the planning an N scale layout which will be based on lines in CA, not quite sure exactly where at this point, and I will be running a freight layout, with intermodal and mixed traffic. I would really like to do a two level layout, with the two levels connected by a helix, it should be possible. The bottom level would be around 26" deep and the upper level around 8". So there should be space on the lower level for some detailed scenery, the upper level would have to be more basic in that way however. We will be in AZ on vacation next month and I will be buying quite a lot of engines, freight cars, and DCC components while we are there. Prices are a lot better in the US than they are here in the UK. Anyway I look forward to learning a lot from being part of this forum. Brian
Welcome Aboard Brian !! I've seen a couple nice looking layouts that guys set up in attics...or lofts as you say. Sure you will get some great ideas here at TB. BTW...there are quite a few n scalers here in AZ. Where all are you planning on visiting while here on vacation? .
Hi Brian, welcome to the Trainboard, we're happy that you have come aboard. As George said, there have been a number of threads over the years where members have shown off their "loft" layouts. Perhaps you can use the TB Search feature to find them. I recommend you use "attic" in addition to "loft" for the search. Also, if you posted a thread in the Inspection Pit asking for ideas and photos of Attic Layouts, you might be overwhelmed by the responses...I hope. :tb-biggrin:
Hi Guys, thanks for the warm welcome. I will definitely be searching for ideas on the site, and will be sure to follow your suggestions. George, we fly in to Phoenix, which is where I plan to do the shopping as we are driving around many of the national parks the rest of the time, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Kodachrome, Monument Valley, North rim of the Grand Canyon, etc. Really looking forward to it, we did the south rim of the Grand Canyon three years ago, it was mind blowing. We did the helicopter tour as well, that was worth every cent of the $210!! I have placed a big order for DCC components with Bruce at Litchfield Station, and a big order for trains and rolling stock with Martin at The Freight Yard. This sort of thing is about half the price in the US to what it is over here. Brian
Was just going to suggest The Freight Yard...LOL. I live 200 miles from Phoenix...and the nearest LHS. Everytime I get down there I try to get by The Freight Yard. Nicely laid out store...well lit...easy to find things. :tb-cool: .
