    So why were the number boards black at first? Was that policy or did they just run out of colors? The SOU was black, too.

    Back in the days of the SOUTHERN, both black and white backgrounds were used. The difference was that white background number boards were used to identify locos that were equipped to be in the lead on trains using mid train remote control. All other locos had black number boards.

    On the N&W, it was something entirely different...

    The black background with white numerals numberboards were glass... starting in the late 60's, they were replaced with plastic numberboards, which were white backgrounds with black numerals.
