GP38 GP38-2 GP38-2B GP38AC Differences noticable to the casual observer or do you have to be a train nut (no offense)? What are they?
Most of the differences are internal, but the Dash 2 has an external sight glass and there is a difference in the spacing of the two radiator fans between models. But, Diesels aren't really my cup of tea, so you'll have to hope an expert can point out rthe rest of the differences.
Dash 2 models are supposed to come with snubbers on one axle of each truck. However if the units were built using trade-in trucks that's not always the case.
I think the Dash 2's have a different end step arrangement. The later model GP38-2's had a new radiator grille design like the later SD40-2's Along side of the view glass, & some air filter modifications (some road specific) visual differance were few unless you are a hardcore rivet counter - the site glass is the main thing people will notice. Okay what else is there, hit me up ? ~ Mike
Pre & post dash 2 cabs are different, later cab has a small overhang at the back on the angled bits and above the cab door.
No asked question is stupid, Dave, just the unasked. On the right hand side of the -2 EMD's there's an oval glass window on one of the access doors (2nd?) under the radiator grills. The sight glass is clearly visible on this Conrail unit. http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/gp382/cr8194er.jpg
Thanks GATS Ouh ok, i have seen that many times, always wondered what that was. What is it that you would be looking at when looking thru the sight glass?
