I have noticed that CN have some locos (9400 to 9632) are labelled GP38-2LW. What does mean the "L" in the model number designation?? Martin.
CN's 9400 to 9632 are actually GP40-2L(W) http://www.cnlines.com/cycl/loco/gp40/index.html#CN9400 I don't know what the L means... maybe remote controlling??? They sure are sweet engines, though.
GP= General Purpose 40= 4000 HP -2= dash 2 electronics upgrade L= Light Duty/Limited? W= Wide Cab Russ
I think it refers to the fact that the units are rebuilt (Possibly by LRC?). This same sort of designator is used on several other models of CN Units, including some SD40s.
I recently got the confirmation... The L means "Lightweigth", refeering that the frame of the loco is made in a lighter version to get the loco going a little bit faster. This kind of loco was (or is) used on GO Transit and some CN lines (not sure of the last infos). The frame is also higher above the trucks. Martin.
