I'm looking in the central U.S. Why, you ask? Of the 5 diesel loco's in view, there are 2 EMD SD's and 2 GE C's, the 5th I can't really make out but it might be another SD. With the river being very muddy, that to me says central U.S. Dan
yeah, thought about the sd locos as well...one might be a sd40-2 with dynamic brakes. looks like a gray top. might be a up loco or a leaser.
What I find interesting is what appears to be scouring of the general landscape from (nearly) north to south, possibly by strong wind or fire. Yet the green space around the buildings and the strange "blob" of green in the upper right seem to be untouched.....? Assuming that the photo was made in winter, the scouring effect might be caused by shadows from bare trees. On other hand, the locomotive shadows are quite short indicating the sun is nearly overhead which means south of 30* N, possibly Mexico. (I agree with Dan that the engines and rolling stock appear North American, so Mexico is not out of the question.) I'm thinking the location was (is?) probably a division point and a locomotive repair facility. It's hard to tell if the turntable is still operational, but the roundhouse foundation is still visible. The larger building appears to be newer than the other to the right, possibly a protected or environmentally controlled repair facility. It's hard to tell if the turntable tracks go into that building as they apparently do with the right-hand building. The big question in my mind is why are there so few houses nearby. I'd think that a facility of this size would have more residences and other buildings, e.g. grocery, bar, restaurant, etc. Even the one road looks to be dirt or at best gravel.
:tb-tongue: We'd be in the 70's if you would stop giving out such helpful hints! Sheesh! I am thinking it's a facility owned by either the NOKL or AOK RRs.
Nope, been to both- niether road owns or runs 6-axle locomotives, and A-OK's roster is all-GE (with one dead ex-Midsouth GP10). Also, A-OK's yard is in downtown Wilburton, OK. I would tend to think Mexico as well, just not sure where.
:tb-tongue: It's the Wheel of Fortune, located a heck of a long way from Mexico!! Somewhere North of Pittston, PA, or West Pittston, or North of Scovill Island, PA.
I don't care. don't know, don't really care. Old water treatment or settling pond, where a water storage tank was, dunno.
I started in Arkansas because of the sickly greenish look of the river and followed rivers northeast until I hit the matching color. The color of the water doesn't really indicate that it is muddy, it is whatever reflected back as the satellite made its pass.
