that's why they produce only "limited runs"...not enough for the demand, so they can keep prices high. I'm not saying their products are not worth the price, all I'm saying is they are maximizing ROI.

Why are you all running around the web looking for old Kato products. Every product mentioned is in a Vancouver Hobby shop, either 3 Floor Hobby, Pacific Scale Rail, and most of it is at Central Hobbies.

    Happy Railroading!

Because 99.99999999999% of the world's modellers don't live in Vancouver or within easy travelling distance? [IMG]

I know Pacif Scale Rail prices are a little inflated compared to many other sites on the Internet. I am picking up my snoots for $62.00 a pop and even a BN SD40-2 for $65.00. You can not beat those prices. There is a large model shop here in St. Paul MN that has a HUGE nscale selection. The problem is every stinking locomotive he has is priced at $95.00 even the Atlas SD60m locos are priced at $95.00 The only good thing about this shop is that he has a ton of older Kato engines. They still have not sold off the past three months. I will exhaust the Internet before I pay these insane inflated prices. If I can not find what I want on the Internet, I will break down and buy local. I did tell him that his locomotive prices were sky high. He did not seem to care. Must be nice to not have to care about your customers [IMG] God Bless the Internet!

    Dual reply!

    1) I know that 99.9999999999% of people are no where near Vancouver, but Central Hobbies does like 50% of their bisness via. snail mail, and E Mail.

    2) Pacific Scale Rail has the worst site I have ever seen. It is maintained (or was, changing webmasters soon) by some one who had no knowledge about trains. Now, you can get a 60M for about 75 Canadian.

    3) Price inflation, Pacific Scale Rail is in Canada. Exchange rate eh! and it cost more to ship stuff up here, that is also reflected in the cost.

    Happy Railroading!

    Matt,

I've been to that store... corner of University Avenue, down the stairs beside the car park (name eludes me). Yes, they have an impressive range of N Scale locos and rolling stock at list or higher. Yes, they have little or no interest in doing other than they have done for years. When questioned about using the internet I felt it would have been too much trouble. They were at that time (Oct 99) just getting around to computerising their inventory!

Where are you finding the Kato SD40-2's for those prices?

    Dane,

Those prices at PSR for the 60M are great. The best I have seen them here in Australia is around $150 (135-140 Cdn) and, at the time of them arriving here, we were within 5% of the Canadian/US exchange rate.
Which is the store in New Westminster, around the corner from the LRT station?

Yes, if you go up 1 block from the Sky Train (LRT) station, and continue for aprox. 5 blocks you will see it. If you look in the window it isn't hard to miss. There is N scale, HO Sxcale, S scale (?) and a small chunk of scenery.

    PS-

At Pacific Scale Rail, I have learned to wait for every one else to buy up most of a new product, and then fly in 2 months later as they will lower the price [IMG] And no, even with limited run they still have some of everything left over [IMG] [IMG]

I fixed your "tounge sticker-outer" Dane, hope you don't mind. [IMG] Just so noone gets upset here's another SD40-2 statement:

I just sold two of my three BN Tiger SD60's (00 and 02) so I could get a Santa Fe or BNSF snoot. I wanted to get two, but I really took a shafting on Ebay. Sold one for $45.00 (US) and the other for $46.00 (US). [IMG] OUCH MAN! I think I started my opening bid too low, but I figured they wouldn't sell at all if I didn't. OH WELL..... [IMG]

The model shop in St. Paul is called Scale Model Supply. The funny thing is the last HO locomotive I bought over 14 years ago was from this guy. Back then his shop was much smaller and was ran out of a house. If I can not find what I want on the Internet, I will buy from him. I got the SD40-s units from Rio Grande Hobbies. http://www.riograndehobbies.com

Their prices for the SD40-2 have creeped up to 69.95 for CNW and 79.95 for UP. I suspect his inventory is starting to dry up. His prices on other items seem very good as well. I need to order my snoots from him. (Had to cancel my order to put a new exhaust in the family van) [IMG] My next paycheck is paying for the Digitrax Radio Chief. It looks like I will be buying my snoots in late june to July, if I can still find any then.

Thanks, Matt. I recalled the name about an hour after I posted. There's another guy who still works out of home on the Minneapolis side of the river. 15-20% off list IIRC. Email for details.

Dane, is it PSR in New Westminster?

I actually buy way too much on Ebay but I have been focusing on BNSF and UP.

    Thanks

I am happy with Kato products and I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my SD40-2's. My only criticism is the price compared to Life Like but it all comes down to supply and demand and while they are outselling there orders I can't see any reduction in price.
