    Welcome back Watash!
    The "ghost" of an electric loco at Soudan was a mere pipe dream... :(

    Wayne-

    Naw. Just something we who knew the days of energized trolley can still easily picture in our minds eye.

    Great to see you posting!

    Exactly what I was hinting about, earlier. Bet they've no clue of the huge landslide, along with smaller ones. And no idea of the pending danger. Just there for the river view.

    This one must be a railroad buff. Looks like an old NP blade...

    That was my next question--the semaphore blade. Thanks for answering it!
    Next up--a few items near Alberton, and the Alberton MILW museum!

    Hemi-

    By chance did you swing off I-90 at Superior? Find the depot?

    No, in the interest of visiting Pipestone Pass, we skipped Superior.

    I watched my Pentrex MILW combo dvd today, and over Pipestone, there was mention of DLZ Bridge. It's east of Donald, but I cannot find a name for the trestle.

    Also, what's the DD- or CC- number on a trestle mean? What's the difference between the 2 terms?

    Letter designations of bridges- Originally, the Milw used a single letter, division by division, to begin each bridge number. When building Lines West, they started at Mobridge with the Trans-Missouri Division. Even numbers were bridges- AA-2, AA-4, etc, on westward. Odd numbers, AA-19, AA-27 or whatever, were various types of culverts and drainages. Concrete arches, concrete or metal piping, wooden boxes.

    Those original divisions were:

    Trans-Missouri= AA
    Musselshell= BB
    Rocky Mountain= CC
    Missoula= DD
    Columbia= EE
    Coast= FF

    After the Missoula was gone, the Idaho created, the Columbia split between Idaho and Coast, then it became a bit confusing. Branch lines are another story.

    Over the years, some trestles were filled, and a culvert left, so you can find an even numbered culvert. You can also find added stuff such as EE-124 2/3. (Number is fictional.) The fraction indicates how far west from the previous full numbered bridge. A highway under crossing is numbered as a bridge, the same for a farm under crossing. Or a flume over head. Everything was designated. You can find over and under on Milw profiles designated as either "o-x" or "u-x."

    On the railroad, there was no such place as "DLZ" bridge. That is purely railfoam stuff. A favorite place that a certain fan from the east side would hang out- His initials. As some of his buddies worked on that video narration, this silliness was slipped in.

    OK, DLZ wasn't the real name--what was the name of that viaduct? Where was the Missoula and RM division points? Alberton and Deer Lodge? Harlo?

    Cyr Tunnel 18!
    East portal:

    [IMG]

    The sign on the fence says "hazardous tunnel keep out"; we'll soon see why!

    West portal:

    [IMG]

    The reason for the blocked tunnel was a fire that destroyed the timber lining in the tunnel to such a point that the roof began to cave in:

    [IMG]

    There's at least 4-5 feet of rock collected on the tunnel floor, for a distance of at least 50 feet!

    Next, we head back to Alberton's museum....

    Argh. I can't think this morning of which bridge. Blacktail? Penfield?

    Trans-Mo was Mobridge- Miles City/Miles City Yard
    Musselshell was Miles City/Yard- Harlowton
    Rocky Mountain Was Harlowton- Deer Lodge
    Missoula was Deer Lodge- Malden
    Columbia was Malden- Cle Elum
    Coast was Cle Elum- Tacoma

    That makes some more sense.

    Blacktail Viaduct exists. I hiked over it. This other trestle has been removed. Penfield? Never heard of it, but I cannot seem to google a real name for it.

    I worked on the E-70 move and restoration project. I must say I'm not impressed with how the paint has weathered either. I am glad however, that she's still there and still beautiful!

    If we ever get another earthquake of any real size, I have a fear that some of those tunnels will be closed forever.

    :thumbs_up: Is that right! That's great news, she was starting to look a little faded.

    BTW, thanks for the update Hemi, I wish I was still living there, I can't imagine how many miles I would put on my truck chasing ghosts. :mwink:
