Hint number 2 Hotshots CTB, BTX, 32, 33, and QLA all changed crews here with no delay (and woe betide those who did delay the QLA)
Clark Hungerford (onetime president of this particular railroad) expanded & rebuilt the yard to the size you see here. Later merger partners demolished the diesel shops.
I'm glad I'm ineligible for beginner contests, because I spent much time near this yard as a youth. There were quite a few good shots off of the Kansas Expressway bridge. North Yard, to the east, was built after the city was somewhat established, so Springfield required that a walkway be built over it so that residents could get from one side to the other. It is a great spot to railfan.
ALmost had to go Homer Simpson on all y'all...........d'oh! Congratulations Keith! Springfield Yard. Springfield. MO Major main lines from St. Louis, Kansas City, Tulsa and Memphis all meet here, as well as the "Leaky Roof" line to Kansas City via Clinton, MO. Clark Hungerford rebuilt and modernized the yard in the late 1940s, and it became the major maintenance center for the Frisco's diesel fleet (except for the Fairbanks-Morse switchers based in Tulsa). The passenger trains all called on the depot in downtown, south of the yard. Thanks to BNSF, the yard is still somewhat busy, but the diesel shop is long gone. Stay tuned until next week, when I come up with another North American rail location! BTW, I also take suggestions for sites to use in the contest from you, the players, so feel free to pass them along.
