For those of you living in Southern California, the Model Railroads Of Southern California group on Yahoo has organized its twentieth layout tour for Saturday, June 26. This will be a free self-guided tour of ten layouts at nine sites in the north and central Orange County areas.

There are two really nice garden railroads on this tour:

    (1) Todd & Linda Brody – This garden scale, front yard layout is quite innovative and incorporates features not seen on other garden railroad displays. The landscape covers over 1,200 square feet with over 550 feet of track and six bridges, including a 14-foot long trestle. The layout is built around two ancient volcanic areas that were thought to be inactive; however; recent eruptions have been noted at two of the craters in one area. The volcanoes spew “lava” into upper, then lower, lakes through two waterfalls. All vegetation in the miniature garden is real and to scale. The entire layout is detailed with structures, over 300 people and animals, cars, motorcycles, etc. all at a scale of ½” per foot. Five trains now run simultaneously, pausing and waiting for each other as necessary. Don't miss Todd's own-design, fully automated signal and operations system.

    (2) Dave Sheegog – Inspirations for garden railroads come from many sources. For this one, it’s Disneyland. The yard for this railroad is roughly 62’x 45’. After the track was in place and the trains were running, the major rock and water features were built. Each feature was undertaken in separate years. All of the rocks are concrete over foam.

John Rayburn worked extensively for Disney and had painted many of the attractions including rocks. John added his magical touch to Castle Peak and Thunder Railroad and in fact, the Big Thunder Mountain is painted with paint left over from the painting of Disneyland’s Big Thunder Mountain. There are four major rock features on the CP&TRR each with its own waterfall or set of waterfalls. I wanted as much of the sound of water as I could get to help mask traffic noise as our rear property line abuts a busy street. The water for each of the falls is circulated by an independent pump. These pumps were readily available at the local home improvement center.

The Disneyland locomotives and rolling stock are amongst the most recognizable in the world and yet they are difficult to impossible to find commercially available. There are five engines that run on the mainline of the CP&TRR. They are scratch built replicas of the five engines of the Disneyland Railroad.

Walt Disney said that Disneyland would never be complete as long as there was imagination left in the world and the same could be said of this project.

Thanx for the info. I visited Walt Disney in Florida last year and then I looked at the website link. All i can say is wow, those scratch built Walt Disney buildings are right on the money. That is one nice garden railroad. Although I was in Walt Disney in Florida, the mini nuildings look just like the ones in Florida.
