Eventually I will have another layout, the bottom level is NM and the other is SP's Shasta Division. Unforunatly, I can't find any good terraserver images that shows, in detail, the Santa Fe Gallup Sub. I want to model from Belen, New Mexico to Gallup, New Mexico. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks, Steve
Your best bet is the Pentrex video and one of the Altamont Press timetables along with the SPV maps. Even better is a personal visit.
I'm with George , come on out to NM and we'll show you around. Most of those pics are west of Dalies which is about 5 miles west of Belen on out about 25 miles. My son and I have driven this when I lived in Albq. . Dalies is where the ATSF main cuts off north to Albuquerque and on to Raton pass. That north line is where the New Mexico Rail Runner service will be and where Amtrak comes down and hits the main and goes on out to California. Mike
Its a beautiful line to railfan. In fact, thats where I fell in love with the ATSF. I was a northern guy, way more disappointed about the BN going, in late 1995 when I got up early from Albquerque visiting a friend and took a ride south to Belen west to the Arizona state line. The first train I saw was a baretable, but it had a matching pair of warbonnet GP60M's, split by a 60B flying across a grade crossing somewhere in the vicinity of Acoma. Ever since then, although it's sometimes tough to admit, I have been a Santa Fe guy. As far as needing some terraserver images, well, there ain't much to see after pullling north of Belen. A junction at Dalies as the above post states. It would be nice to see some of the track splits, as the two mains to seperate a couple different times. There is a small yard at Gallup too. But, if I recall correctly, I'd say zero online industries. Even the few coal lines that join are a little west of Gallup I believe. I hope you do this layout, as I would love to see it. You'd be doing another link in the chain, as a few of us on here model the Santa Fe in 1995 along different areas. And to add another possibilty, check out: http://www.globeexplorer.com NM is not the greatest, but its color until you get really down there. Thanks. I own the Pentrex combo DVD, however they don't show the Belen Yard as much as I need. I'll give Google Earth a try. Thanks again, Steve
I fell in love with the Transcon around Belen when I visited it last year. Got to love a depot and museum that have a viewing platform on the roof! Vaughn would be a cool place to model - small yard and an interchange with the UP (exSP). Plus a boatload of intermodal action!!!!
Does anyone know how many tracks the Belen Yard has? We could play "Who wants to count the yard tracks in a bad resolution photo?" My eyes are good, but I still can't make out all of them. I guess the layout doesn't need picture perfect accuracy, but it would still be nice to know. Oh yeah, what is that loop I saw on the Google Local photo? Anyway, if anyone can make a track plan for a 15'x15' space, that'd be cool beans. I am tossing around a Double Deck idea with a hidden helix (oooooo).
If you truly want to count them paste the image into a program like MS Paint and enlarge 2 to 4 X. They will be countable.
