I have a Friends Mother who has Just found a LGB " The Big Train" Starter set in her deceased Husbands Garage and wants to know if she can Set it up in her Garden in Memory of him..

What advise can I give in regards to How to Set it up???

How can she keep the Controller Moisture free and can the Train and Track be left out side in the garden while the Sprinklers water the Garden ??

I have seen the controller put in a covered enclosure, disconnected and taken indoors when not in use or back under a car port out of the weather. When joining the track sections LGB sells a conducting lube grease that will keep the moisture out and make a better electrical joint between track sections. A good pad track cleaner run periodically can keep the track clean enough to get an engine around at high speed until the track is cleaned well. If it gets too dirty you may have to clean it by hand to get things going.

You might want to check out this web site:

    Large Scale Online

It is a subscription site but they do have some free info and a forum gut for large scale.

You're best bet is to log on the free web site mylargescale.com. Deals with everything you can think of when deaking with outdoor railroading. LGB trains were built for the outdoors, rain/water will not harm the track or rolling stock but I would bring the locomotive in out of the elements. Check out that website for more info.

Well at $50 AUS per 1.2 Metres it is gonna cost a lot of money to do so plans are on the back burner for at least a little while

You can get track a lot cheaper than that! Check here for The Sydney LGB & Garden Railway Club:
    http://www.trainweb.org/lgbofozclub/
Here for our Oz LargeScale group:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ozLSgroup/
& here for more local info:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Austgardenrailway/
The equipment is more than capable of remaining outside but most of us do take the locos indoors when not operating. I've had rolling stock out in permanently for nearly 9 years on the Ridge.
For lots of info for beginners check my URL:
    http://www.trainweb.org/toenailridge/
I second the suggestion re checking into http://www.mylargescale.com Excellent source of info & beginners questions are welcome. Re the other site mentioned, why pay when so much info is free?
